Most B-kyu gurume can easily be replicated at home, so it\u2019s also got the added home cooking, \u201cmade with love\u201d factor to it as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These Japanese comfort foods are also known as <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3054\u5f53\u5730\u30b0\u30eb\u30e1<\/span> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gotochi gurume<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">)\u2014or \u201clocal dishes\u201d\u2014because they feature local ingredients. What counts as B-kyu gurume in Osaka is completely different from what is comfort food in Sapporo. There are shelves of these in every supermarket, convenience store and even take-out bento shops in Japan\u2014that\u2019s how common they are.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another rice-based comfort food is <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u5375\u304b\u3051\u3054\u306f\u3093<\/span> (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tamago kake gohan<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Basically, you crack a raw egg over some plain white rice and add a dash or two of soy sauce for flavor. That\u2019s it. It can also be topped with a slab of&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u3068\u3093\u304b\u3064<\/span>&nbsp;(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>tonkatsu<\/em><\/span>; &#8220;pork cutlet&#8221;) or&nbsp;<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u725b\u30ab\u30c4<\/span>&nbsp;(<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><em>gyukatsu<\/em><\/span>; &#8220;beef cutlet&#8221;). It\u2019s not spicy at all, very hearty and something that most Japanese people eat at least once a week.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spaghetti Napolitan was invented in Yokohama by Chef Shigetada Irie of Hotel New Grand during the postwar period. It consists of well-cooked pasta (no <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">al dente<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> here), with a sauce made from onions, green peppers, bacon or ham and\u2026 ketchup. Yes<\/span>, t<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">he sauce is made almost entirely from Japanese ketchup (some add tomato paste to thicken it). Some winners of that competition later go on to have their products turned into limited-edition foods sold in convenience stores and supermarkets as well.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mini versions of these festivals or celebrations of their wins are also often held in parking areas. Three-time winner of the B-1 Grand Prix, Fujinomiya yakisoba is responsible for the tourism renaissance that its hometown underwent. <\/span>N<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ow, there\u2019s even a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.umya-yakisoba.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fujinomiya Yakisoba Society<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that promotes authentic versions of this dish around Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While yakisoba itself is a B-kyu gurume, what sets Fujinomiya yakisoba apart is that the yakisoba noodles, cabbage and meat are then topped with sardine powder (as opposed to straight-up bonito flakes), sauce and pickled ginger. The noodles are also made with less water, resulting in a firmer texture than other types.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id='sanuki-udon-burger'><strong>Sanuki Udon Burger<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The second dish is one that carb-lovers will really enjoy. The Sanuki udon burger (\u8b83\u5c90\u3046\u3069\u3093\u30d0\u30fc\u30ac\u30fc) originates from Kagawa Prefecture, the smallest prefecture in Japan. Kagawa is also aptly nicknamed the \u2018udon prefecture\u2019 as it\u2019s home to Sanuki udon<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Several hundred udon shops, each with their own take on this classic dish.<\/span><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Udon noodles are thick and very filling on their own, but when fried and piled high on a burger (with or without a patty or two), they become a delicious yet unhealthy regional delight. There are many varieties of Sanuki udon burgers available<\/span>.<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Personally, I find the best one to be without a patty and topped with a fried egg.
