A Savvy guide to which luxury J-beauty products deliver the best results for beautiful and radiant skin. ]]>
japanese luxury skincare

Japan is known for its innovative and luxurious skincare ranges that bridge the gap between science, indulgence and beauty. However, when many of these stunning products come at extravagant prices, knowing which are actually worth the high price can be tricky. In this guide, we’re breaking down the top luxury J-beauty brands, so you know which products don’t just deliver on aesthetics, but results.

Clé de Peau

Despite its French name and branding, Clé de Peau was founded in Japan in 1982 with the goal of creating beauty products that bring luxury in every aspect. At its core is the “Skin Intelligence” philosophy, which focuses on supporting the skin’s natural ability to recognise good and bad stimuli.

Worth It

1. Essential Refining Essence (コレクチュールエサンシエルn)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥10,450 for 170ml

A pore-refining lightweight essence to apply before serums. It soothes, supports the skin barrier and hydrates, using anti-inflammatory active ingredients. The essence also contains luxurious hydrolyzed silk to create an ultra-smooth sensation on the skin.

2. Hydro-Clarifying Lotion (ローションエサンシエルC)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥14,300 for 170ml

A refined, high-performance lotion that delivers weightless hydration while enhancing smoothness and complexion. The formula features aspergillus ferment, a prestige ingredient, and plant collagen to plump, condition and hydrate the skin.

3. La Crème (ラ クレーム)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥71,500 for 30g

This is the ultimate option in splurge luxury skincare. Although it comes at a high price, Clé de Peau’s La Crème moisturizer is packed full of active ingredients that target signs of ageing, uneven tone and loss of firmness, all within beautiful packaging that feels indulgent to simply pick up.

Not Worth It:

On the other hand, Clé de Peau’s serums are not quite as worth the high price point. They are still good products that feel premium to use, but they lack the high concentration of actives or unique ingredients that would justify the cost.

Shiseido

Shiseido is a heritage brand that epitomizes Japanese elegance through premium beauty products. Its skincare lines balance traditional Japanese ingredients with scientific innovation, promising to deliver noticeable skin improvements through a deeply luxurious experience.

Worth It

1. Complete Cleansing Microfoam (コンプリート クレンジングマイクロフォーム)

Shiseido-Complete Cleansing Microfoam
¥5,390 for 180ml

The cleanser might seem simpler than some of Shiseido’s other products, but its premium formula and more reasonable price point really set it apart. The microfoam cleanser has an innovative surfactant blend that keeps skin clean without disrupting the skin barrier.

2. Ultimune Power Infusing Serum (パワライジング セラム)

Shiseido-Ultimune Power Infusing Serum
¥19,800 for 75ml

One of Shiseido’s bestselling products, this serum is built around the brand’s proprietary “ImuGeneration Technology”. This innovation provably strengthens your skin’s resilience and hydration retention for long-term results that outperform other luxury serums at a similar price point.

3. Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF (パーフェクト サン プロテクター ローション)

Shiseido-Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF
¥6,600 for 50ml

This is a high-performance Japanese sunscreen that not only provides SPF50+ PA++++ protection, but also uses Shiseido’s proprietary tech to be more water-resistant than typical SPF products. It has a rich, indulgent texture on the skin, whilst also being easily absorbed and is specifically formulated to wear under makeup.

Not Worth It

Given its high price point and minimal active ingredients, we would recommend avoiding the Future Solution LX line. The products are claim to keep skin looking younger for longer, favoring traditional botanical complexes. However, these formulas have lower clinical results and feel dated compared to modern innovations like retinoids or high-strength vitamin C.

SK-II

SK-II was created after a scientist noticed the youthful appearance of a sake brewer’s hands, leading to the discovery of Pitera. This unique fermentation derivative is said to improve hydration, texture and skin clarity, which only SK-II has the right to use.

Worth It

1. Facial Treatment Essence (フェイシャル トリートメント) エッセンス)

SK-II-Facial Treatment Essence
¥12,650 for 75ml

This is not just one of SK-II’s bestselling products, but also Japan’s. It has been the top-selling toner in the country for six consecutive years and has won countless beauty and skincare awards. It contains 90% Pitera in three different forms, which deeply hydrate in a super lightweight formula that cannot be reproduced by any other company.

2. Facial Treatment Clear Lotion (フェイシャル トリートメント クリア ローション)

SK-II-Facial Treatment Clear Lotion
¥10,450 for 160ml

This toner/lotion hybrid combines AHAs with salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and cleanse pores of dead skin cells whilst hydrating. This wonderfully prepares the skin for serums and richer moisturizers, with noticeable improvements in skin texture and complexion.

3. GenOptics Infinite Aura Essence (ジェノプティクス インフィニットオーラ エッセンス)

SK-II-GenOptics Infinite Aura Essence
¥22,000 for 30ml

This product acts as a highly effective brightening serum that uses a notably functional blend of Pitera, niacinamides and amino acids to improve dullness and an uneven skin complexion. It helps skin appear more radiant and even, targeting dark spots and over-pigmentation.

Not Worth It

For us, the LXP Kintsugi Line is the least worth it of the SK-II product ranges. It is positioned at their most premium tier, but when you compare ingredients and formulas, the products don’t offer anything particularly special to justify the higher price. The packaging and feel of the products reflect the ultra-lux branding, but functionality and results are lacking.

Decorté

Decorté produces science-forward Japanese luxury skincare products that move away from reliance on an old-money aesthetic to focus on true innovation, radiance and beauty.

Worth It

1. Liposome Advanced Repair Serum (リポソーム アドバンスト リペアセラム)

Japanese Skincare
¥12,650 for 50ml

This is Decorté’s star product, which has won over 370 beauty awards and is widely considered one of the best Japanese serums on the market. It has a barrier-boosting, deeply hydrating formula that uses lipids, ceramides, ectoin and fermented extracts for provable skin results that are reflected across the Liposome line in general.

2. IP Shot Pluripotent Youth Concentrate (アイピー ショット プルリポテント ユース コンセントレイト)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥11,550 for 20g

An anti-wrinkle serum that provides targeted treatment to reduce signs of ageing on your skin. It combines tranexamic acid, niacinamide and antioxidants, with a formula that is able to penetrate deeply into the epidermis for cutting-edge and long-term results.

3. Whitelogist Brightening Concentrate (ホワイトロジスト クロノジェネシス ブライトニング コンセントレイト)

Japanese Skincare
¥13,200 for 30ml

If you’re looking for brighter and more radiant skin, then you need to know about this serum. Its active ingredient is kojic acid, which provably slows down melanin formation to reduce dark spots and brighten your skin’s complexion. For an even more potent option, there is a 1.8x version priced at ¥19,800 for 30ml.

Not Worth It

Unfortunately, we don’t think the Lift Dimension line delivers the same impressive results as some of Decorté’s other products. Although the textures are undeniably rich and luxurious, the formulas rely heavily on emollients and botanical extracts rather than high-impact actives that genuinely improve firmness or elasticity.

Sensai

Sensai is all about refined luxury, having been inspired by Japan’s spirit of hospitality and historical silk craftsmanship. The products are elegant, delicate and silk-infused to elevate and romanticise the daily skincare routine.

Worth It

1. Absolute Silk Micro Essence-in-Lotion (AS マイクロ エッセンスインローション)

Sensai-Absolute Silk Micro Essence-in-Lotion
¥14,300 for 125ml

An anti-ageing lotion infused with Koishimaru silk extract for velvety soft and supple skin. The product was designed with multi-layered hydration technology, leaving skin moisturized deeper and for longer than a standard lotion.

2. Ultimate The Lotion (UTM ザ ローション)

Sensai-Ultimate The Lotion
¥30,030 for 125ml

A premium lotion that goes beyond basic hydration to support skin resilience and brightness, formulated with niacinamide and barrier-friendly lipids like cholesterol and hydrogenated lecithin. It enhances the skin’s natural repair processes and strengthens the moisture barrier while delivering a rich, silky texture.

3. Silky Purifying Cleansing Oil (SP クレンジング オイル)

Sensai-Silky Purifying Cleansing Oil
¥6,490 for 150ml

The perfect first step in your double cleansing routine, this cleansing oil dissolves stubborn products gently without a stripped feel. It contains squalane and botanical extracts to leave skin soft and refreshed.

Not Worth It

Sensai’s Extra Intensive products are “nice to have” items, but we wouldn’t label them as “must-buys”. The eye cream and masks, in particular, have some lovely supportive ingredients to moisturize the skin, but lack functional, potent formulas that deliver the results you would expect at these extravagant price points.

The Right Products For Your Skin

choosing the right skincare
Take it slow and keep it simple

It’s important to remember that every person’s skin is different. What works for you might not be compatible with someone with the same complexion and areas of concern. To avoid breakouts or damaging your skin’s barrier, make sure to introduce new products one by one and remember that real results take months to appear, not days.

Drugstore Skincare in Japan: Breaking Down The Most Popular Brands & Products

Shopping for drugstore skincare in Japan is such a treat. You can find some of the most innovative, interesting and reasonably priced products in the world, that we think even rival some of the ultra-luxury brands that cost 10 times as much.

However, we also know that deciding exactly what to buy can be confusing, especially in Japanese. That’s why we’re breaking down Japan’s cult drugstore skincare favorites, so that you can confidently shop the products already loved and repurchased by the masses.

There isn’t too much you need to know before setting foot in a Japanese drugstore. Unlike some other places, 薬局 (yakkyoku; “pharmacies”) and ドラッグストア (doraggu sutoa; “drugstores”) are not the same thing in Japan. The yakkyoku is only for prescription medications, so you won’t be able to shop for skincare here.

There are plenty of different drugstores all over the country, but the most popular chains are Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Welcia and Tsuruha. You can also find all the Japanese drugstore skincare on this list and more in any Donki (along with every other Japanese souvenir imaginable).

Hada Labo

Hada Labo is easily one of the most popular skincare brands in Japan, best known for their range of colorful toner and lotion duos. Japanese toner (sometimes referred to as emulsion) differs slightly from its Western counterpart. It’s more of an ultra-lightweight moisturizing step that is applied in very thin layers before being locked in with the slightly thicker lotion (sometimes called moisture milk).

Gokujun 極潤 (White) & Gokujun Premium 極潤プレミアム (Gold)

Hada Labo’s Gokujun toners and lotions are their holy grail products. The white bottles contain the original formulation, which is made with hyaluronic acid to deeply moisturize the skin without leaving a sticky residue. If you prefer a lighter formulation that sinks into the skin faster, then you should opt for the ライトタイプ (raitotaipu; “Light Type”) lotion, or for a little more luxury, choose the gold Premium range, which uses an even more intensified, rich and moisturizing formulation.

Gokujun Aging Care 極潤薬用ハリ化粧水 (Red)

Gokujun Aging Care 極潤薬用ハリ化粧水 (Red)

The red Gokujun toner and lotion are specifically formulated to firm and plump the skin, reducing the visible signs of aging. The ingredients include three types of hyaluronic acid for deep moisturization, as well as niacinamide to minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Shirojun 白潤 (Light Blue) & Shirojun Premium 白潤プレミアム (Dark Blue)

While Gokujun focuses on moisturizing, Shirojun is all about “whitening”, meaning it brightens the skin and helps to reduce hyperpigmentation. It contains tranexamic acid, which both reduces dark spots and prevents cells from producing excess pigment in the future. The Shirojun Premium line has similar benefits, but in a richer formula that fights dullness for soft, supple and even skin.

Melano CC

Melano CC is Japan’s premier vitamin C drugstore skincare line, ideal for anyone suffering from dull and tired skin. The products contain high levels of ascorbic acid, a pure form of vitamin C that offers numerous benefits. It reduces dark spots and acne scars, boosts collagen and fights free radicals.

Vitamin C Serum & Premium Vitamin C Serum

Starting with the most well-known products, Melano CC offers these highly concentrated and unique vitamin C serums that contain an impressive amount of stabilized ascorbic acid. They’re designed to brighten dark spots, with only a few drops being needed to cover the whole face. The premium serum is similar to the original, but with additional vitamin C derivatives and moisturizing ingredients.

Vitamin C Facewash

Vitamin C Facewash

Melano CC’s face wash soared in popularity a few years ago, with people loving the way it leaves skin feeling squeaky clean, but not tight or stripped. It features a fantastic combination of unique enzymes to cleanse gently, along with intensely nourishing ingredients that both clean and care for your skin.

Nameraka Honpo

Nameraka Honpo by Sana has created a really interesting (and very popular) range of skincare products that highlight the beautifying properties of soy milk. The brand is a favorite among various age groups for its ability to promote collagen production and hydrate the skin, resulting in an impressive anti-aging effect.

Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream

Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream drugstore skincare

The Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream is easily one of the brand’s best-selling products, having also won multiple awards for its ability to reduce fine lines and firm the under-eye skin. It packs a hydration punch with multiple moisturizing ingredients, as well as the rejuvenating properties of soymilk isoflavones and the anti-aging benefits of both retinol and a retinoid.

Soy Milk Wrinkle Night Cream

Soy Milk Wrinkle Night Cream

This thick and luxurious night cream has all the benefits of the wrinkle eye cream, plus additional ceramides to stimulate cell turnover and strengthen the skin barrier. It’s a fantastic product, particularly for drier skin types, that leaves skin feeling soft and not sticky.

Soy Milk Medicated Wrinkle Serum

Soy Milk Medicated Wrinkle Serum

There’s no cutting corners when it comes to this serum. The ingredient list includes lactic acid to exfoliate gently, retinol to boost blood flow and collagen production, and niacinamide to help restore the skin’s barrier. It works to achieve long-term, firmer and plumper skin, in gentle enough dosages to avoid irritation or inflammation.

Bioré

Bioré is a brand that is widely recognized throughout Japan (and now the world), thanks to its innovative products, particularly its sunscreens. The brand has placed a strong emphasis on making all its products as enjoyable and straightforward to use as possible, while also being some of the most budget-friendly Japanese skincare items available.

The Cleanse Oil Make Up Remover

The Cleanse Oil Make Up Remover drugstore skincare

If you’re looking for a simple, affordable and easy-to-use cleansing oil to break down makeup, debris and SPF, then this is the product for you. It’s also award-winning, having placed first in the 2023 LDK’s beauty awards in the cleansing oil category.

The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers

The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers

Bioré is all about the double cleanse, recommending you follow oil cleansing by using one of The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers. This range of foamy face washes features five different, colorful types, making it easy to select the right product for your skin. There’s moist (blue), deep moist (pink), acne care (green), oil control (purple) and smooth clear (yellow).

UV Aqua Rich

UV Aqua Rich

You can’t talk about Bioré without mentioning their UV Aqua Rich line of sunscreens. These are the absolute bestsellers in Japan that are as light as water on the skin, quickly absorbed and leave minimal whitecast. The Bioré UV Aqua Rich Water Essence is the most popular formulation, but there are also mist, sweat-resistant and child-friendly formulas.

Curél

Curél offers some of the gentlest Japanese skincare products on the market, which are highly effective yet very affordable. People with sensitive skin especially love the range, as potentially inflammatory ingredients are avoided and replaced with simple, calming alternatives.

Moisturizing Foam Facial Cleanser

Moisturizing Foam Facial Cleanser drugstore skincare

This is an excellent product for anyone seeking a gentle face wash that won’t irritate or strip the skin. It’s alcohol, silicon, oil, sulfate and fragrance free, and lathers into a luxuriously creamy foam that delicately washes your skin, leaving it feeling soft to the touch.

Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream

Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream

The Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream does exactly as the name suggests. The ingredients include allantoin, which is highly effective in reducing redness and irritation, while tocopherol helps maintain your natural skin lipids, promoting a healthy and strong skin barrier.

Moisture Lip Care Cream

Moisture Lip Care Cream

It’s a bold statement, but this might just be one of the best lip balms in Japan. This super-affordable lip cream utilizes squalane to help your lips retain moisture more effectively, making it a must-try, especially during Japan’s severe winter dryness.

Why Is Japanese Drugstore Skincare So Good?

It’s hard to believe that Japanese drugstore skincare can be affordable, readily available and genuinely effective…but trust us, it’s true! The reason behind this is that J-beauty has an entirely different approach to skincare formulation than in the West. It’s all about balance and gentle, long-term results, rather than fast-working actives that can be expensive and irritating to the skin.

Which of these drugstore skincare products will you try first?

Double-Cleansing: The Best Japanese Oil & Water Cleansers For Every Skin Type

Double cleansing might seem like a 21st-century TikTok trend, but it has actually been practiced by women in Japan and Korea since the 1300s. The ritual was later perfected by Geisha, who relied on it to maintain their beautiful skin beneath layers of traditional makeup.

Their method involved two steps: first, using oil to break down the thick makeup, then following with a gentle rice-bran wash to remove any residue. It was (and continues to be) of the utmost importance for these women to be able to maintain their heavy makeup routine without it having adverse effects on their skin condition.

The technique doesn’t require any fancy products or expensive equipment, but it can result in beautifully radiant skin. Continue reading to discover the top Japanese skincare products for double cleansing and learn how to incorporate this technique into your routine.

What Is Double Cleansing?

Photo of woman applying cream on her face while looking in the mirror© Photo by iStock: AleksandarNakic

Double cleansing is a skincare technique where, instead of simply washing your face quickly in the evening, you use both oil-based and water-based cleansers to achieve clean and mochi-soft skin. The two-step cleansing style effectively cleanses your skin of all makeup residue, dirt and excess oil, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals or scrubbing.

This should be the first step of your evening skincare routine, which, with the right products and the proper application, will leave your skin feeling fresh, soft and radiant.

Step One: Oil Cleansing

One of the most essential qualities of makeup and facial SPF is that they need to be somewhat waterproof in order to withstand sweat, rain and the general wear of a twelve-hour day. To achieve this, these products are formulated so that they do not break down just in water. That’s why using an oil-based cleanser as your first step is so essential: it removes heavy product on the skin without you having to scrub and potentially irritate your face.

Step Two: Water-Based Wash

Even after washing away your oil-based cleanser, you may still notice a slight slick or residue on your skin. That’s where the water-based face wash comes in. This second cleansing step works to clean your skin of any buildup, oil-resistant product or oil-cleanser residue for perfectly clean skin. Skip this step, and you risk blocked pores and even breakouts.

Double Cleansing For Sensitive Skin

With sensitive skin, every added product can pose a risk of irritation or reaction, but what’s more concerning is the impact of leaving product buildup on your skin overnight. For a sensitive-skin-friendly routine, look for cleansing products with simple ingredients, avoiding those that contain exfoliating agents.

For individuals with dry skin, cleansing can be a daunting skincare step that strips away natural oils, leaving the face feeling tight and uncomfortable. However, with the right products, double cleansing can actually help moisturise the skin. Prioritize ingredients like ヒアルロン酸 (hiaruron san; “hyaluronic acid”), which helps hydrate while cleansing, and スクアラン (sukuaran; “squalane”), which encourages the skin to retain moisture.

The Art Of Japanese Skincare

Antique Japanese Illustration: Two women by Torii Kiyonaga© Photo by iStock: ilbusca

Unlike Western skincare practices, Japanese products and techniques are designed with a focus on balance and gentleness. Generally, J-beauty products are less about active ingredients and dramatic results, and are designed to work with your skin in its current condition, supporting it for long-term beauty and radiance.

Everyone’s skin is different, and the exact same product will likely work differently on two people, even if they have the same skin type. The key is to introduce new skincare steps carefully and one at a time.

If you are trying out the double cleanse for the first time, take care to limit other new products and techniques for at least a month. Skin time to adjust, with the real benefits of the double cleanse technique showing across months and years, not hours or days.

What products do you use in your double cleansing routine?

21 Amazing Japanese Skincare Products to Minimize Pores

The first thing to understand about the skin’s pores is that they don’t actually shrink or grow. Their size is pre-determined by genetics. However, by using the proper skincare, you can make them appear smaller. J-beauty is renowned for its gentle approach to skincare. While this is true, it doesn’t mean there aren’t amazingly effective products that utilize active ingredients to produce noticeable skin improvements. In this Savvy guide, we’re sharing 21 of the best Japanese skincare products to minimize pores, as well as which ingredients to look out for and avoid in order to combat enlarged pores.

The Right Ingredients For Minimizing Pores

The Right Ingredients For Minimizing Pores© Photo by iStock: Marina Demeshko

When using skincare to minimize the appearance of pores, the goal is to avoid irritation and inflammation and instead promote skin elasticity and hydration for a more plump and smooth complexion.

Using the wrong ingredients can cause excess oil production and clogged pores, which can draw attention to them and make your pores appear larger. So you know what to look for in a product yourself, here are the dos and don’ts of pore-minimizing ingredients:

Pore Minimizing Ingredient Dos

 • BHA, AHA, PHA: These are chemical exfoliants that will keep pores clear and reduce skin congestion. Good ones to look for are the BHA salicylic acid (サリチル酸); AHAs like lactic acid (乳酸) and citric acid (クエン酸); and PHA gluconolactone (グルコノラクトン)
 • ナイアシンアミド (naiashinamido; “niacinimide”): Also known as vitamin B3 (ビタミンB3), Niacinimide regulates oil production and helps you get a smoother skin texture.
 • レチノール (rechinouru; “retinol”): A form of vitamin A (ビタミンA) that increases cell turnover to improve overall texture, as well as regulates sebum and helps to fight acne.
 • アゼライン酸 (azerain san; “azelaic acid”): This acid has antibacterial properties, gently unclogs pores and reduces inflammation.

Pore Minimizing Ingredient Don’ts

 • Comedogenic Oils: Things like coconut oil (ココナッツオイル) and cocoa butter (ココアバター) that are more likely to clog pores by trapping debris in the skin and causing buildup.
 • アルコール (arukoru; “alcohol”): Products with alcohol can strip the skin’s natural oils, causing an increase in oil production while dehydrating skin. Common ones to avoid are ethanol (エタノール), isopropyl alcohol (イソプロピルアルコール) and alcohol denat (変性アルコール).
 • 香料 (kouryou; “fragrance”): A common irritant that can result in inflammation and even breakouts. Watch out for things like linalool (リナロール), citronellol (シトロネロール) and geraniol (ゲラニオール).

Best Japanese Skincare Products To Minimize Pores

Cleansing Oil

Implementing a cleansing oil before a face wash is known as a “double cleanse” and is used to remove impurities from the skin effectively. A cleansing oil, in particular, is excellent for breaking down makeup and sunscreen, ensuring that no residue or debris is trapped in your pores.

BCL Cleansing Research Oil Cleansing Pore Clear

Budget Recommendation: BCL Cleansing Research Oil Cleansing Pore Clear | ¥1,100 for 200ml

Mid Tier Recommendation: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Mid Tier Recommendation: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil | ¥2,450 for 200ml

Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil

Luxury Recommendation: Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil | ¥4,070 for 180ml

Face Wash

The second step of the double cleanse is to use a water-based cleanser to wash away sweat, dirt and any trace of the cleansing oil. Although it may be tempting to use a stripping face wash to remove all natural oil, we recommend opting for a gentler option. This will prevent your skin from overcompensating for its oil production, leaving you with a fresh face ready for the next step in your skincare routine.

Melano CC Deep Clear Enzyme Face Wash

Budget Recommendation: Melano CC Deep Clear Enzyme Face Wash | ¥600 for 130g

Ishizawa Lab Keana Nadeshiko Baking Soda Scrub Face Wash

Mid Tier Recommendation: Ishizawa Lab Keana Nadeshiko Baking Soda Scrub Wash | ¥1,320 for 100g

DAMDAM Tokyo Nomad’s Cream

Luxury Recommendation: DAMDAM Tokyo Nomad’s Cream | ¥4,950 for 150g

Toner

Japanese toners are somewhat different from what is considered a toner in the West. They are used to hydrate the skin, typically featuring very lightweight formulas that are perfect for more oily complexions. They keep skin plump and well-hydrated, making pores look smaller due to the surrounding skin being smoother and more elastic.

Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Emulsion

Budget Recommendation: Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Emulsion | ¥855 for 140ml

Hokuroku Sousui Oil Controlling Toner

Mid Tier Recommendation: Hokuroku Sousui Oil Controlling Toner | ¥1,850 for 110ml

SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion Toner

Luxury Recommendation: SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion | ¥10,450 for 160ml

Serum

Japanese toners are the perfect prep for applying active ingredients found in serums. Look for things like Niacinimide, retinol and azelaic acid, but don’t overdo it. Using too many active ingredients can damage the skin barrier, cause breakouts, and make pores look larger and inflamed, especially if you have sensitive skin.

We recommend using only one or two potent actives in your routine, remembering that retinol should be used at night and paired with a morning facial SPF.

Kracie Hadabisei Medicated Brightening Toner

Budget Recommendation: Kracie Hadabisei Medicated Brightening Serum | ¥960 for 30ml

KISOCare 15% Azelaic Acid Serum

Mid Tier Recommendation: KISOCare 15% Azelaic Acid Serum | ¥2,250 for 30ml

SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence Serum

Luxury Recommendation: SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence | ¥22,000 for 30ml

Moisturizer

A moisturizer is important for more than just hydration. It works to lock in the serum and increase effectiveness, as well as actually balancing oil production as dry skin causes excess sebum that clogs and stretches pores. For oily complexions, a gel formula is best, while a richer cream or emollient is more suitable for dry skin.

Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel

Budget Recommendation: Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel | ¥990 for 180g

M-mark Amino Acid Moisturizing Lotion

Mid Tier Recommendation: M-mark Amino Acid Moisturizing Lotion | ¥1,936 for 150ml

DAMDAM Mochi Mochi Luminous Cream

Luxury Recommendation: DAMDAM Mochi Mochi Luminous Cream | ¥9,540 for 50g

SPF

Probably the most crucial daytime skincare step is facial SPF. Without protection, UV rays break down the skin’s elastin and collagen, causing the skin to sag and pores to lose support (and appear larger). Finding the right sunscreen is critical, as many can be overly irritating or oily on the skin.

Hada Labo UV White Gel Moisturizer SPF

Budget Recommendation: Hada Labo UV White Gel Moisturizer SPF | ¥1,250 for 90g

Anessa UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF

Mid Tier Recommendation: Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF | ¥3,050 for 60ml

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF

Luxury Recommendation: Shiseido Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF | ¥6,600 for 50ml

Masks

Face masks are amazing for focusing on a particular skincare ingredient or result, and maximizing its effectiveness. When it comes to Japanese skincare products to minimize pores, look for masks designed to repair the skin barrier, soothe and lightly exfoliate.

Lululun Hydra V Mask

Budget Recommendation: Lululun Hydra V Mask | ¥770 for 7 masks

Snidel Beauty Smoothing Sheet Mask

Mid Tier Recommendation: Snidel Beauty Smoothing Sheet Mask | ¥2,420 for 3 masks

The Ginza Treatment Facial Mask

Luxury Recommendation: The Ginza Treatment Facial Mask | ¥22,000 for 6 masks

Finding Your Perfect Skincare Routine

Remember, every person’s skin is different. What works for one person might not work for another, and so finding the right Japanese skincare products to minimize pores can take some trial and error. The key is to introduce products one at a time and pay attention to what works best for your individual skin type.

 • Retinol: A form of vitamin A that promotes collagen production, cell turnover, and the formation of new blood vessels. Should be applied at night with SPF worn during the day.

How to navigate the world of Japanese sun protection and find your perfect SPF, whether you have dry, oily or acne-prone skin.]]>
Find The Right Japanese Sunscreen For Your Skin Type

Japanese sunscreens are considered to be some of the best in the world, thanks to their innovative UV-A and UV-B filter technology. These sun protection products are known for standardizing much higher SPF and PA protection ratings without ever compromising on texture or experience. Japanese sunscreen is lightweight enough to wear under makeup, rarely sticky and leaves a glowing finish on the skin.

When there are so many amazing SPF options on the market, knowing the right product for your particular skin type can be challenging. That’s why we’ve put together this Savvy guide to finding your perfect Japanese sunscreen for every skin age, concern and need.

Dry Skin

When it comes to finding sun protection for dry skin, it’s important to search for sunscreens that are essence, milk or cream-type. These are specifically formulated with additional moisturizing ingredients like hyaluronic acid, hydrolyzed collagen and propylene glycol to keep your skin hydrated for longer. You should also avoid gel-type sunscreens, which can potentially strip dry skin.

Sensitive Skin

Sunscreens can often be an offender for irritating sensitive skin due to the chemical reaction of UV blockers. To minimize this risk, we recommend choosing a sunscreen that’s not just fragrance and alcohol-free, but has been specifically formulated for sensitive skin. These products are typically allergy-tested and created with UV-blockers that are less likely to trigger easily inflamed skin on the face and body.

Budget Recommendation:

Oily Skin

For oily skin, look for gel-type sunscreens. These lighter-weight Japanese formulas are designed for fast absorption and oil control and leave a mattifying finish on the skin. As sunscreen can wear off faster on oily skin, you may want to choose products that are particularly moisture resistant, for example, those with a high UV-resistance rating (UV耐水性) of one to two stars.

Budget Recommendation:

Acne-Prone Skin

To limit aggravating acne-prone skin, we suggest selecting Japanese sunscreens that do not contain any harsh alcohols, common allergens or potential triggers for fungal acne, such as stearic acid. Non-comedogenic ingredients like silica and vitamin E are less likely to block pores to avoid future breakouts, while brightening formulas are great to reduce acne scars and discoloration.

While broad-spectrum sunscreens are always important for protecting the skin, opting for products with high UV-A protection is particularly important for mature skin. Mature skin may also benefit from brightening and anti-aging ingredients such as niacinamide and tocopherol.

Sunscreens need to be not just formulated for sensitive toddler and baby skin, but also fast-absorbing without any stickiness. 9 Gifts For Expecting Mothers That They’ll Genuinely Love

Anticipating the arrival of a new baby is an exciting time, not only for the parents-to-be but also for those who have the privilege of celebrating alongside them. While hunting for gifts for expecting mothers is normal, the temptation to splurge on every cute toy, outfit or gadget on the market can be hard to overcome.

No matter how delightful these gifts may be, they are not always the most practical. New parents often find themselves inundated with items that, although lovely, end up as just a waste of space. This gift guide will help you find genuinely good presents for new parents with three different categories of goodies: useful gifts, meaningful presents and gifts for mom.

Useful Gifts

These gifts are for expecting mothers who will find them useful but may not think to buy them for themselves.

Breast Feeding Pillows

Maternity pillows are often high on an expecting mom’s ‘want but don’t need’ list, making them amazing gifts. These specially designed pillows support a baby during breastfeeding, making the experience a little bit easier for new parents.

There are lots of different maternity pillow gift options, like My Brest Friend, which clips around mom’s waist to support the weight of their baby. A Boppy Pillow is another great choice as it is shaped like a large neck pillow for a baby to nestle into.

Baby Bouncers

Most expecting Mothers will have bassinettes, cribs and strollers covered, but baby bouncers can be a game-changer gift. These bobbing seats should be lightweight enough to easily move around the home so that new parents always have somewhere to set down their baby.

The BabyBjorn Bouncer is a premium choice and generous gift that grows with a baby, or the Baby Delight Alpine Bouncer offers great quality at a more accessible price point.

A Diaper Cake

A popular baby shower group gift, a “diaper cake” elevates gifting less glamorous but extremely useful items. To make one, stack diapers together into a tiered wedding cake shape and decorate it with ribbons and small toys. Adding additional toiletry items like baby lotion, diaper cream and wet wipes is a great way to further the gift’s usefulness for expecting Moms.

 • Price: ¥4,000~¥8,000
 • Where to buy it: Diapers are available in most drugstores or baby stores like Akachan Honpo

Meaningful Gifts

The best meaningful gifts for expecting mothers are items that hold sentimental value without losing out on functionality.

Storybooks

Storytime is a beautiful moment for new parents to bond with their babies, and a great children’s book can be read over and over again for many years. To add meaning to this gift, select a book that you remember from your own childhood. Many foreign storybooks can be ordered online, or Kinokuniya locations have a large selection of English-language kids’s books that span many decades.

 • Japanese Recommendation: I Say, You Say by Wakiko Sato
 • Price: ¥2,200
 • Where to buy it: Order online from Kosodavinavi.com

Omamori

Give the gift of spiritual protection with omamori, a traditional amulet or charm sold at Shinto and Buddhist temples across Japan. There are many kinds of omamori, each offering luck and protection for a different purpose including for expecting parents.

Anzan omamori in particular offers protection for pregnancy and safe childbirth. This amulet can be purchased from most shrines, however, Suitengu Shrine in Nihombashi is specifically dedicated to the safe arrival of new babies.

Baby Hakama

Gifting baby clothes can be tricky. Newborns grow out of outfits astonishingly quickly, and it is difficult to guess the taste or preference of expecting parents. Instead of buying every cute outfit for a newborn aged zero to three months, consider selecting a single special piece sized three to six months, such as a baby hakama.

Unlike kimono, baby hakama have pants and are often marketed as baby rompers in Japan. They’re practical clothing pieces that are cute but also hold sentimental value.

Gifts for Mom

When everything is about the new baby, don’t forget to treat the mom because all expecting mothers deserve to be spoiled.

Massage Gift Card

Treat a pregnant woman to some much-needed rest and relaxation with a massage. Pregnancy can be an exhausting physical experience, especially in the months leading up to birth and every expecting Mom deserves some TLC. Don’t forget to look for spas that offer specific pregnancy-safe massage options such as The Peninsula Spa or Detox Spa Damai in Tokyo.

Post-baby Sushi Dinner

Pregnancy-safe food recommendations vary significantly around the world. While Japan does not recommend avoiding raw fish, many Western countries do and many expat Moms choose to go without sushi when expecting.

Gift an expecting Mother a post-baby sushi dinner as both a delicious meal and an excuse to get out of the house and socialize. For a budget and baby-friendly option, consider kaiten zushi (train sushi) chains like Sushiro, Kura Sushi or Hamazushi.

Hydrogel Breast Pads

Gel breast pads are the best of all worlds: practical, thoughtful and a luxury item for new moms. Many expecting mothers avoid splurging on these items as hydrogel breast pads come at a premium cost but would truly appreciate receiving them as a gift.

 • Recommendation: Momcozy Hydrogel Nipple Pads
 • Price: ¥5,424 for a pack of six
 • Where to buy it: Amazon
