Not Worth It:

Not Worth It

Given its high price point and minimal active ingredients, we would recommend avoiding the Future Solution LX line. The products are claim to keep skin looking younger for longer, favoring traditional botanical complexes. However, these formulas have lower clinical results and feel dated compared to modern innovations like retinoids or high-strength vitamin C.

SK-II

SK-II was created after a scientist noticed the youthful appearance of a sake brewer’s hands, leading to the discovery of Pitera. This unique fermentation derivative is said to improve hydration, texture and skin clarity, which only SK-II has the right to use.

Worth It

1. Facial Treatment Essence (フェイシャル トリートメント) エッセンス)

This is not just one of SK-II’s bestselling products, but also Japan’s. It has been the top-selling toner in the country for six consecutive years and has won countless beauty and skincare awards. It contains 90% Pitera in three different forms, which deeply hydrate in a super lightweight formula that cannot be reproduced by any other company.

This toner/lotion hybrid combines AHAs with salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and cleanse pores of dead skin cells whilst hydrating. This wonderfully prepares the skin for serums and richer moisturizers, with noticeable improvements in skin texture and complexion.

3. GenOptics Infinite Aura Essence (ジェノプティクス インフィニットオーラ エッセンス)

This product acts as a highly effective brightening serum that uses a notably functional blend of Pitera, niacinamides and amino acids to improve dullness and an uneven skin complexion. It helps skin appear more radiant and even, targeting dark spots and over-pigmentation.

Not Worth It

For us, the LXP Kintsugi Line is the least worth it of the SK-II product ranges. It is positioned at their most premium tier, but when you compare ingredients and formulas, the products don’t offer anything particularly special to justify the higher price. The packaging and feel of the products reflect the ultra-lux branding, but functionality and results are lacking.

Decorté

Decorté produces science-forward Japanese luxury skincare products that move away from reliance on an old-money aesthetic to focus on true innovation, radiance and beauty.

Worth It

If you’re looking for brighter and more radiant skin, then you need to know about this serum. Not Worth It

Unfortunately, we don’t think the Lift Dimension line delivers the same impressive results as some of Decorté’s other products. Although the textures are undeniably rich and luxurious, the formulas rely heavily on emollients and botanical extracts rather than high-impact actives that genuinely improve firmness or elasticity.

Sensai

Sensai is all about refined luxury, having been inspired by Japan’s spirit of hospitality and historical silk craftsmanship. The products are elegant, delicate and silk-infused to elevate and romanticise the daily skincare routine.

Worth It

Not Worth It

Sensai’s Extra Intensive products are “nice to have” items, but we wouldn’t label them as “must-buys”. There isn’t too much you need to know before setting foot in a Japanese drugstore. Unlike some other places, 薬局 (yakkyoku; “pharmacies”) and ドラッグストア (doraggu sutoa; “drugstores”) are not the same thing in Japan. The yakkyoku is only for prescription medications, so you won’t be able to shop for skincare here.

Japanese Skincare Words & Phrases

Hada Labo

Hada Labo is easily one of the most popular skincare brands in Japan, best known for their range of colorful toner and lotion duos. Japanese toner (sometimes referred to as emulsion) differs slightly from its Western counterpart. It’s more of an ultra-lightweight moisturizing step that is applied in very thin layers before being locked in with the slightly thicker lotion (sometimes called moisture milk).

Gokujun 極潤 (White) & Gokujun Premium 極潤プレミアム (Gold)

Hada Labo’s Gokujun toners and lotions are their holy grail products. The white bottles contain the original formulation, which is made with hyaluronic acid to deeply moisturize the skin without leaving a sticky residue.
