Founded by an artist with a passion for educating, Tokyo Creators Kids empowers its students to build confidence, independence and curiosity through self-expression.]]>
Tokyo Creators Kids

Located just a short walk from Shibuya station is a place where art projects meet live music, and where creativity grows alongside self-confidence. Tokyo Creators Kids (TC Kids) was founded by artist Isaac Schulz with a mission to create a calm, supportive space where children don’t just lean into their creative side, they learn to be themselves. The school opened in August 2013 and has since grown organically within the Shibuya-Daikanyama community. For international families looking for a fun, friendly and English-speaking environment for their little ones, here is what you need to know about Tokyo Creators Kids.

The Story Behind Tokyo Creators Kids

Tokyo Creators Kids
Isaac’s passion for art and education led him to establish TC Kids over 10 years ago.

Growing up inspired by North Carolina’s nature and hailing from a family of artists himself, Isaac’s practice is focused on tradition and art history. His work led him to Japan, where he first visited for an art show in Shibuya. A combination of Tokyo’s energy and his passion for education led him to teach at international schools around the city before finally establishing TC Kids over 10 years ago.

Teaching Philosophy

Tokyo Creators Kids
Each curriculum highlights the joy of creating and building confidence.

At TC Kids, it’s not about the results; it’s about the creative process. Here, children are encouraged to explore, stay curious and express themselves. Compared to traditional art education, which follows a set structure and evaluation guidelines, Isaac and his team highlight the joy of creating and building confidence. “I give a demonstration of options,” Isaac explains. “I ask a lot of questions during that process. By the time they answer, their minds are already creating. When they move to their workspace, they aren’t starting from scratch; they are already working.”

Each project is inspired by combining art history, contemporary information and what the children enjoy making. Isaac then finds the intersection of all three and reintroduces it to his students. Building on this method keeps TC Kids growing and successful, as each batch of students is unique. According to Isaac, “it keeps the culture of the school alive and fresh.”

All teachers at TC Kids have been introduced through word of mouth. Some even have their own kids enrolled at the school.

Classes on Offer

Tokyo Creators Kids
After preschool classes, there’s also an after-school art club and Saturday school.

TC Kids is for preschool-age children. Starting from Mommy and Me classes for infants to toddlers up to age two, then a five-day-a-week preschool. After preschool classes, there’s also an after-school art club and Saturday school.

While art is the medium, each curriculum is designed to develop the whole child. Materials are introduced slowly and with the intention for curiosity to build.

A typical class at TC Kids features:

 • Music and Movement: Singing, dancing and physical activity to keep energy high and spirits happy.
 • Communication and Language: Activities that focus on voicing their ideas in English in a wide range of situations.
 • Art Projects and Storytelling: Through art, children develop the ability to concentrate for long periods and the confidence to express their unique ideas.

The Tokyo Creators Kids Effect

TC Kids prides itself in developing confident, creative and independent students

Historically, students who graduate from TC Kids have a high passing rate to their school of choice in Japan and abroad. Additionally, after their time at TC Kids, students from non-English-speaking countries demonstrate a strong command of English. Beyond high passing rates and English fluency, TC Kids prides itself in developing confident, creative and independent students that display long focus times.

As a community, TC Kids is as international as they come. What started as a local community in downtown Tokyo has blossomed into a worldwide network. Isaac shares that every so often, families who met through enrolling their children at TC Kids sometimes send videos and photos of meetups abroad.

Enrolling at Tokyo Creators Kids

Tokyo Creators Kids
Come visit and meet the team behind TC Kids!

For parents considering enrollment, the message is simple: come play. Isaac and his team welcome families to visit, observe the teaching style firsthand and see if the environment resonates. Growth and development at TC Kids are viewed as a collaborative effort between teachers and parents. By providing a nurturing framework, the school helps children reach their potential while ensuring they feel good every step of the way.

How to Connect

If you’re ready to see your child’s creativity flourish, you can reach out to Isaac and the team through the Official Tokyo Creators Kids website, their Instagram account or by phone.

As Isaac puts it, “TC Kids is a really wonderful place to be. I love going there every day. We look forward to meeting you.”

New Life Season in Japan: New Mattress, New Me https://savvytokyo.com/new-life-season-in-japan-new-mattress-new-me/ https://savvytokyo.com/new-life-season-in-japan-new-mattress-new-me/#respond Thu, 26 Feb 2026 22:00:00 +0000 https://savvytokyo.com/?p=99224

Shopping for a mattress during shinseikatsu (new life season) in Japan? Here’s what actually matters and how to avoid the mistakes most people make.]]>

April marks the start of shinseikatsu—“new life” season in Japan. The season for new apartments, jobs, schools and new everything. By the time you’ve survived the ward office and assembled Nitori shelves, you’re likely running on fumes. We agonize over apartment choices for weeks. But sleep? It’s easy to say you’ll deal with it once you’re settled. Just grab whatever mattress fits through the door. Except “once you’re settled” never arrives. Buying a mattress in Japan isn’t like back home. When your bedroom doubles as your office and living room, the decision takes more planning.

The Japan Mattress Problem

new life season in japan
Futons are compact, but they’re firm and need daily folding and airing

Tokyo isn’t exactly the most restful place. Work hours are long, and commutes can be brutal. According to OECD data, people here average seven hours of sleep per night—the shortest in the developed world—and women in Japan sleep even less. So if you’re only getting seven hours, those seven hours had better count.

Then the actual shopping experience is a beast in and of itself. Sales pressure is high, and you’re deciding based on five minutes of lying down fully clothed under fluorescent lights. That doesn’t tell you much about how a mattress will feel after a full night’s sleep, night after night.

Online is easier with better prices and less pressure, but it can be a gamble. Can you trust the return policy? Will it even fit through your door? You won’t know until it shows up.

And there’s the futon versus Western bed debate. Japanese-style futons are compact, but they’re firm and need daily folding and airing. Western beds offer comfort but claim permanent floor space. Most of us just default to whatever seems easiest to buy at the moment and pay for it with our sleep later.

What Actually Matters

new life season in japan
Sleep quality matters

I made a classic mistake during my first new life season in Japan. I told myself I’d upgrade my sleep situation once I had more money, space and time. And if you’ve ever tried to wedge a full mattress up a second-floor walk-up in Tokyo, you understand why convenience wins.

Eventually, my finances grew. My family grew. My apartment got bigger. But I never had more time. What I got was a sore lower back and the kind of exhaustion three coffees before noon couldn’t touch.

Here’s the thing about the new life season in Japan, though. It might actually be one of the best times to deal with this. You’re already rebuilding everything from scratch, so routines haven’t hardened yet. “Good enough” hasn’t turned into “this is just how it is now” (which lasted three years for me, not kidding).

If I learned anything, a few new life seasons in, it’s that sleep quality matters, especially balancing work and family. I know a good mattress won’t fix Japan’s work culture, but it can give you a good shot at actually resting during the hours you have.

So what should you look for?

 • Lower back support – Your commute’s already killing your back, so your mattress shouldn’t finish the job. Look for something that keeps your spine aligned, no matter how you sleep.
 • Temperature regulation – Japan’s summers are relentlessly humid, and winters are freezing. Hybrid constructions tend to improve airflow, which makes a noticeable difference year-round.
 • Flexibility – In smaller homes, compatibility matters. Look for a mattress that can work on bed frames or directly on tatami (traditional Japanese floor mats), depending on how your space is set up.
 • An actual trial period – Not five minutes in a store. You want a 30+ day trial that lets you test it through full sleep cycles in your actual bedroom.

What Works in Japanese Apartments

new life season in japan
Emma Sleep mattresses are lightweight, flexible and offer support

The best mattress isn’t the fanciest one. It’s the one that balances comfort and flexibility, especially if you’re living in a small space or might move again in a year or two.

This is where brands that get Japan’s housing situation stand out. Emma Sleep is one example. Their mattresses are lightweight and flexible enough to work on a bed frame or a tatami mat, with the comfort and support of Western mattresses.

The hybrid construction provides lower back support (which, if you’ve ever slept on a too-soft or too-hard futon, you know how much this matters) and temperature regulation built for Japan’s weather. The mattresses are shipped compressed in a box for delivery, which can make that first setup easier in buildings with tight stairwells or small elevators. The fact that your bed can now be delivered to your door in a box is a dream.

Starting Fresh

Small changes can make a bigger difference than you’d think

Each new life season brings excitement and momentum, and it asks a lot of you all at once. Small changes during this reset can make a bigger difference than you’d think. Anchor sleep to fixed wake times. Put work away at night. Cut screens 30 minutes before bed. And make your bed worth sleeping in.

Emma is currently on a New Life Sale that offers up to 50% off, along with an additional 10% off if you use the code “SAVVY10”, which may make upgrading easier during an expensive season. Originally founded in Germany, the company has become one of Europe’s most popular mattress brands, with over five million sleepers and 12.5 million products sold worldwide. For some readers, it may even be a name they recognize from home. That means, unlike your work hours or apartment size, this is one part of a new life season that you can actually choose intentionally.

Don’t let good sleep slip away. Visit the Emma Sleep Japan website to know more.

What are you prioritizing in your space this spring?

Discover how families in Japan can apply to top global boarding schools. Learn about benefits, summer programs and expert admissions support.]]>
Boarding School Admissions For Families in Japan

For globally minded families in Japan, boarding schools offer a unique chance to nurture independence, curiosity and confidence in young learners. From the U.S. and Canada to the UK, Japan, and beyond, these schools focus on holistic development—blending academics with sports, the arts, community engagement and real-world learning that goes far beyond the classroom. But with so many options to choose from, boarding school admissions can feel like an overwhelming journey to navigate.

What Are Boarding Schools?

What Are Boarding Schools?© Photo by iStock: andresr

Boarding schools are private institutions where students live and study on campus during the academic year. These schools attract students from all over the globe due to their robust academic programs, extensive extracurricular offerings, and emphasis on character development.

The boarding experience is designed to foster independence, self-discipline and a sense of community. A typical day includes:

 • Attending challenging, college-preparatory classes
 • Participating in afternoon activities, sports, or the arts
 • Dedicated evening study hours
 • Living in dormitories supervised by faculty or house parents

Many schools offer a home-like environment with strong community values, mentorship and extensive access to academic support.

While boarding schools typically serve students in their final years of secondary education, junior boarding schools are designed for younger students. These schools prepare students in grades five through nine for future success at top high schools by providing a nurturing yet academically challenging environment. Junior boarding schools often attract motivated, curious students with strong academic or personal interests and help them develop essential skills such as time management, personal responsibility, and English fluency in an immersive setting.

Summer & Academic Enrichment Opportunities

Beyond the academic year, many boarding schools offer summer programs and enrichment courses designed to extend learning and build skills, such as time management, socioemotional skills, etc. These programs serve a dual purpose: they offer students a chance to explore subjects of interest while also giving them an early introduction to boarding school life.

Some summer programs mirror the school-year experience, combining academics with afternoon activities and residential life. Others offer intensive academic tracks, such as:

 • Advanced math
 • Robotics
 • Creative writing
 • Debate

They can also focus on soft skills like leadership, teamwork or college readiness. English language immersion programs are especially popular among international students who want to strengthen their confidence in an English-speaking environment.

The Admissions Process

The Admissions Process© Photo by iStock: Imgorthand

Applying to a boarding school requires much more than just filling out an application. Families must manage:

 • School research
 • Application portal logins
 • Test registrations (SSAT, ISEE, UKiset and/or IELTS/TOEFL for non-native English speakers)

Students will need to write application essays, collect recommendation letters and prepare for admissions interviews—all while adhering to different application deadlines.

Application platforms vary. While US boarding schools typically use Gateway to Prep Schools or the SAO (Standard Application Online), UK and Canadian boarding schools often require direct applications. Each school has its own expectations for what makes a strong candidate, including academic performance, extracurricular achievements, writing ability and interview presence.

Encourage Passion Projects 5 Ways Students Can Beat The Summer Slide in Japan

Summer in Japan brings a delightful mix of festivals, travel and well-deserved breaks from international school routines. Yet for expat parents, there’s often concern about the “summer slide”—that potential loss of academic momentum during the long break. While some children might lose ground in math and reading skills over summer, others find opportunities for different kinds of growth, especially international school students navigating multiple languages or changing curricula.

For Tokyo’s expat families, summer offers a unique chance to blend learning with the city’s vibrant culture while keeping kids prepared for the coming school year. Here are five practical strategies to maintain academic momentum while enjoying all summer has to offer.

1. Turn Reading Into A Daily Adventure

Turn Reading Into A Daily Adventure Summer Slide© Photo by Tokyo Academics

Reading regularly remains one of the most powerful ways to prevent learning loss. For expat kids balancing English, Japanese or other languages, consistent reading keeps their language skills sharp and their minds engaged.

Make reading an adventure by exploring Tokyo’s literary landscape.

 • Visit the International Library of Children’s Literature in Ueno for bilingual books that connect your family’s heritage with Japanese culture.
 • Bookstores like Kinokuniya offer excellent English sections with everything from picture books to young adult novels.
 • Create reading challenges with small rewards, perhaps a special treat from a local bakery after finishing a book. The key is making reading feel like an exciting part of summer, not a chore.

2. Explore Tokyo’s Top Summer Programs

Structured programs provide balance during the long break, especially for academically motivated students. Tokyo’s international community has access to excellent options that combine learning with fun to boost essential skills.

Look for programs that match your child’s interests and academic needs throughout the city, like:

Many international schools offer their own summer program options, which provide the added benefit of familiar surroundings. Local tutoring centers like Tokyo Academics offer one of the most popular summer programs in Tokyo. These programs help students prepare for the upcoming year by strengthening academic foundations and helping children develop social skills and confidence before returning to school.

3. Encourage Passion Projects

Summer’s open schedule creates the perfect opportunity for children to pursue passion projects—self-directed activities that align with their interests. These projects naturally build motivation and important skills like time management and creative problem-solving.

Help your child identify something that excites them:

Set up a dedicated project space with supplies from your favorite stationery store, and celebrate milestones with special family activities. These projects keep minds active while developing skills that will serve them well when school resumes.

4. Weave Learning Into Everyday Activities

Your local environment offers countless opportunities to blend learning with daily life. For international school students, these experiences can reinforce academic skills while feeling natural and enjoyable.

 • Cook family dishes together to practice math through measuring and fractions.
 • Visit museums you haven’t explored recently and encourage your children to journal about their experiences.
 • Play board games or traditional games like shogi (Japanese chess) to develop strategic thinking.

These authentic experiences support the values of global citizenship that international schools promote, allowing children to learn through activities that feel like fun rather than work.

5. Prepare For Academic Transitions

Prepare For Academic Transitions© Photo by Tokyo Academics

Summer provides valuable preparation time for students facing important transitions—whether moving to middle school, starting high school or preparing for college applications. In international schools with rigorous academic standards, targeted support can make these transitions smoother.

For younger students transitioning grades, focus on building foundational skills that will set them up for success. Older students preparing for standardized tests or college applications might benefit from specialized programs with experienced instructors. Balance these academic pursuits with relaxation and family time to maintain motivation without burning out.

Create a balance of learning and leisure that works for your family, and make this summer a positive foundation for your children’s continued development as global citizens.

Tokoyo No Naganakidori This Yakitori Omakase Made Me Fall In Love With Jidori Chicken

Hidden away on the second floor of an unassuming building in Omotesando is an intimate yakitori restaurant called Tokoyo No Naganakidori. From the moment you ascend the staircase, you’re greeted by a space that feels exclusive yet inviting. With just 10 counter-seats surrounding an open kitchen, every guest enjoys a front-row view of Japan’s chicken grilling artistry. Specializing in yakitori omakase, this newly opened restaurant, is a hidden gem quietly redefining how people experience high-end yakitori in Tokyo.

Reinventing Yakitori

Reinventing Yakitori© Photo by Tokoyo No Naganakidori

Yakitori may be a staple of casual dining in Japan, but here, it’s an art form. Only serving one omakase menu to a limited number of guests each night, Tokoyo No Naganakidori guarantees all guests enjoy a dining experience that incorporates authentic flavors with an elevated touch.

The service is impeccable, striking a balance between warmth and professionalism. Chef Toshihiro Osawa even takes time to share insights about the ingredients and cooking techniques, adding a personal touch that deepens the experience.

The 16-item course menu, heavily influenced by the Kyushu region of Japan, offers guests the opportunity to taste the best cuts of native chicken along with the season’s freshest vegetables.

The Surprising Menu Highlight?

The Surprising Menu Highlight? Liver yakitori© Photo by Shelley Smith

The liver skewer. Unlike the metallic, rubbery texture often associated with liver, this one is incredibly creamy, almost buttery, with a mild sweetness and deep umami flavor. Another memorable bite was the chicken meatball, wrapped in nori and topped with egg yolk and caviar. The sensation of the egg yolk bursting in the mouth, melding with the tender chicken mince, created an explosion of creaminess that was nothing short of luxurious.

Pairing Additions

Pairing Additions Sake© Photo by Shelley Smith

The friendly sommelier, who also serves the dishes, expertly guides guests through the pairings of sake and wine. Sake dominates the first half of the course, with lighter, subtly sweet varieties complementing the delicate flavors of the appetizers. The well-balanced Nichinichi Yamadanishiki sake, was especially enjoyable as it had just the right level of acidity to cut through the rich chicken juices. As the meal progresses, sake gives way to carefully selected white and red wines to better match the even richer cuts.

The Unexpected Pleasure of Raw Chicken Sashimi

Tokoyo No Naganakidori© Photo by Shelley Smith

Raw chicken is rarely found on menus outside Japan, and for good reason—it’s not commonly considered safe. However, in the hands of a master chef, torisashi (raw chicken slices) become a delicacy. Dipped in sweet Kyushu soy sauce, each cut offers a slightly different texture—some incredibly soft, others with a subtle crunch. The clean, mild flavor is reminiscent of high-quality fish sashimi, making it an unexpectedly delightful experience.

Jidori (a type of free-range chicken unique to Japan), or specifically the kurosatsuma chicken used at this restaurant, is particularly safe to eat raw due to its exceptionally high-quality breeding and strict handling standards. Kurosatsuma chicken is a black meat from Kagoshima prefecture developed with one of the three native Japanese fowl species. It’s especially renowned for its tenderness and juicy umami flavor.

Unlike conventional chicken, this jidori breed is raised with rigorous hygiene protocols. These chickens are free-range and fed a natural diet and processed using specialized methods that minimize bacterial contamination. In Japan, only certain licensed restaurants are allowed to serve raw chicken to ensure that it is handled at the highest safety standards. Tokoyo No Naganakidori is one of these restaurants.

The Customer’s Choice

Ultimately, for those too hesitant about trying raw chicken, there’s no need to worry. At Tokoyo No Naganakidori, the course can be tailored to each guest’s preferences. The chef is more than happy to cook the meat using a low-temperature technique that preserves the delicate flavor and freshness of the jidori chicken while offering a more familiar texture.

A Taste of Japan’s Culinary Past

A Taste of Japan’s Culinary Past© Photo by Shelley Smith

The true secret of this refined restaurant lies in its ability to transport you back in time—an opportunity to try a taste of Japan before the Meiji era. One of the most remarkable aspects of Tokoyo No Naganakidori is its commitment to preserving authentic, pre-modern Japanese ingredients. The rice they use is asahimai rice from Okayama prefecture. Similar to their use of kurosatsuma chicken, this rice is another rare find. Asahimai rice is an heirloom variety that remains untouched by genetic modification. It offers a firmer, more distinct texture than modern rice blends.

Japanese Tradition With A Touch of European Elegance

Japanese Tradition With A Touch of European Elegance© Photo by Tokoyo No Naganakidori

The restaurant’s interior evokes the charm of a luxurious Japanese train carriage—deeply rooted in tradition but accented with European refinement. The setting is warm and intimate, designed to make diners feel both at ease and immersed. Subtle ambiance music fills the space, creating a calm atmosphere that enhances the meal without overshadowing conversation. Even the bathroom reflects attention to detail, with kodo incense and a bonsai adding a delicate touch of Japanese tradition.

Seasonal Considerations

Seasonal Considerations© Photo by Shelley Smith

A core element of Japanese cuisine is celebrating the seasons, and this restaurant wholeheartedly embraces that philosophy. From the vibrant, juicy seasonal vegetables in their yakitori omakase menu to the beautiful cherry blossom bonsai display for spring, every detail evokes a deep connection to nature and tradition.

So, Who Should Dine Here?

So, Who Should Dine Here?
“The beauty of yakitori is in its simplicity—but it demands precise technique. If guests can recognize that, it means a lot to me.” Chef Toshihiro Osawa

This isn’t just a meal—it’s an experience. More refined than your typical izakaya yakitori joint, Tokoyo No Naganakidori is perfect for special occasions, date nights and food lovers seeking an elevated omakase-style yakitori experience. Whether introducing friends and family to the depth of Japanese cuisine or indulging in a night of culinary excellence, this hidden gem is a must-visit for all.

Kimono Turned Into Graceful Modern Dresses https://savvytokyo.com/kimono-turned-into-graceful-modern-dresses/ https://savvytokyo.com/kimono-turned-into-graceful-modern-dresses/#respond Wed, 13 Nov 2024 23:00:00 +0000 https://savvytokyo.com/?p=81966 Kimono Turned Into Graceful Modern Dresses

In an era where sustainability and cultural preservation are more important than ever, Kien stands at the intersection of timeless Japanese craftsmanship and modern fashion.]]>
Kimono Turned Into Graceful Modern Dresses

Founded by Yoshie Kitagawa, a passionate advocate for traditional Japanese arts, Kien breathes new life into the iconic kimono. This innovative brand not only redefines the kimono as a wearable work of art but also promotes a more sustainable approach to fashion by upcycling vintage kimonos into contemporary dresses.

Let’s dive into the story of Kien, explore its unique approach and discover why their dresses have become a global sensation.

A Legacy of Tradition and Craftsmanship

A Legacy of Tradition and Craftsmanship© Photo by Kien

Kien was born from Yoshie Kitagawa’s deep connection to her roots in Kyoto, the heart of Japan’s rich kimono culture. Yoshie has long supported local artisans, many of whom are part of workshops with over 500 years of history in kimono fabric craftsmanship. These artisans have passed down their meticulous techniques, which are reflected in every piece Kien creates.

Through Kien, Yoshie celebrates and preserves the cultural significance of the kimono, a garment that has symbolized Japan for centuries. However, in modern times, the opportunities to wear traditional kimonos have drastically diminished. As a result, many exquisite kimonos are left forgotten in storage, often becoming dead stock or, sadly, discarded.

Kien addresses this challenge by transforming these historic kimono garments into modern fashion pieces—elegant dresses that blend tradition with innovation.

Upcycled Kimonos

One of Kien’s standout features is its commitment to transforming hand-selected vintage kimono into stunning modern dresses. Each dress pattern is carefully developed, offering twelve unique styles. Moreover, customers can even personalize their designs! For instance, you can select the colors and patterns that resonate with you most, making every piece one-of-a-kind.

Kien’s dresses are not just beautiful; they are meaningful.

The fabric used in Kien’s creations is sourced from some of the finest vintage kimono available. They’re crafted from rare fabrics that cannot be replicated today, as the skilled artisans who once made them have retired. These exquisite textiles carry the stories and history of generations of craftsmanship.

By reimagining the kimono as a contemporary fashion piece, Kien preserves the garment’s historical and cultural significance while making it accessible and relevant to modern audiences.

Sustainable Fashion

Kien’s approach to fashion is grounded in sustainability. By upcycling vintage kimonos, Kien reduces waste and minimizes the environmental impact of garment production. Accordingly, this commitment to eco-friendly fashion is a core part of the brand’s philosophy. Each piece not only has cultural value but also contributes to a more sustainable future.

Furthermore, Kien’s designs are made to last. With their timeless appeal, these dresses are not just fleeting trends—they are heirlooms that can be passed down for generations, helping to preserve the artistry and beauty of Japan’s kimono culture for future generations.

From Vintage To Modern

From Vintage To Modern© Photo by Kien

Transforming vintage kimono into modern dresses is no simple task. Kien’s production methods respect the intricate craftsmanship of kimono, with each garment carefully deconstructed and reworked by hand. Unlike traditional garment making, the techniques required to upcycle a kimono demand specialized training and expertise.

First, each kimono is unstitched and washed using methods that are unique to the delicate fabric. Then, the design is carefully reconstructed into a contemporary dress that retains the kimono’s artistic integrity. The result is a stunning garment that balances tradition and modernity, with intricate details and a flattering silhouette.

From Japan to the World

Although Kien began in Japan, its reach is rapidly expanding worldwide. The brand has already gained recognition among Japanese and international celebrities. Kien’s dresses frequently appear on red carpets and at high-profile events. Customers from around the world are drawn to Kien’s unique blend of tradition and contemporary design, and approximately 20% of Kien’s clientele resides overseas.

In addition to its growing global presence, Kien is planning to expand further.

For customers in the Middle East, their dresses are already available on the online platform Arabian Boutique. The brand has also opened a pop-up shop for a limited time at the Takashimaya department store in Singapore. Looking ahead, Kien plans to enter the U.S. market and is actively seeking business partners to help bring the beauty of Japanese kimono culture to international audiences while preserving its traditional essence.

Overseas sales:

 • Singapore Pop-Up: Nov. 11-24, 2024, at Takashimaya 3F
 • Middle East: Arabian Boutique

Business partnerships: Contact Kien at info@kimonokien.jp.

Kien’s showrooms in Tokyo and Kyoto offer an immersive, personalized shopping experience for those wishing to learn more about the kimono culture and purchase a one-of-a-kind dress. Both showrooms operate on a reservation-only basis. Visitors can view the kimonos in person, learn about the meanings behind the different patterns and place custom orders. Additionally, ready-to-wear pieces are available for on-the-spot purchases.

For those unable to visit in person, Kien’s online store offers the same level of customization. Customers can choose fabrics and designs from the comfort of their homes.

Celebrating Japanese Heritage

Kien is more than just a fashion brand; it’s a movement that honors the beauty, craftsmanship and cultural heritage of the kimono. By transforming vintage kimonos into modern dresses, Kien not only preserves the artistry of Japan’s past but also creates pieces that resonate with today’s fashion-conscious consumer.

The Must-Visit Secondhand Luxury Event in Tokyo

BrandCo Paris, a leader in the secondhand luxury market, is set to host an exclusive one-day-only event in Tokyo on Saturday, November 23, 2024. This exciting occasion marks the brand’s highly anticipated debut in Japan. For fashion lovers, this is the chance to browse and purchase from a curated selection of pre-loved luxury accessories. No invitations are needed—everyone is welcome to indulge in this unique shopping experience.

Japan’s fascination with secondhand luxury goods is no secret. From Shibuya’s trendsetters to Ginza’s most discerning clientele, savvy shoppers are turning to secondhand shopping for pre-loved designer pieces for their value and allure.

Affordability

Luxury fashion has long been a symbol of exclusivity, craftsmanship and status, but it often comes with a hefty price tag. A brand-new designer handbag from prestigious brands like Chanel or Louis Vuitton can easily cost upwards of ¥300,000, with some high-end items reaching into the millions.

This is where the second-hand luxury market steps in as a game-changer. Especially in a world where trends come and go, the second-hand luxury market offers an affordable way to indulge in timeless elegance without breaking the bank. And rest assured, luxury items are built to last, so pre-owned doesn’t mean compromised.

Environmentally Friendly

Purchasing secondhand not only gives luxury lovers access to items that might otherwise be out of reach but also supports a growing movement toward sustainability. You may not know, but when you invest in pre-owned luxury, you’re actively participating in the circular fashion economy. This model emphasizes reuse, recycling and extending the lifespan of garments and accessories. As a result, the movement has gained tremendous momentum in recent years, particularly as consumers become more aware of the environmental consequences of fast fashion and overproduction.

This is very important as the fashion industry is one of the largest contributors to global waste and pollution. Consequently, millions of tons of textiles end up in landfills each year. By purchasing second-hand, luxury lovers can help reduce the environmental impact of fashion by giving these high-quality items a second life.

By choosing to shop at events like BrandCo Paris’s one-day showcase, you’re not just indulging in exquisite fashion; you’re making a positive impact on the planet. Sustainable luxury is no longer just a trend! It’s a responsible and stylish way to enjoy high-end fashion while minimizing your environmental footprint.

Unique Finds

One of the most exciting aspects of shopping for second-hand luxury is the opportunity to uncover unique pieces that are no longer available in regular stores. Whether it’s a limited-edition Dior handbag, a discontinued Hermès scarf or a vintage Chanel clutch, secondhand shopping offers the thrill of finding rare gems that can’t be found on current shelves.

Luxury brands frequently release exclusive collections, and once they sell out, it becomes nearly impossible to purchase new ones.

Investment

Beyond their timeless appeal, some luxury items can actually appreciate in value over time. This makes them more than just stylish purchases—they’re smart investments. Pieces from brands like Hermès, Chanel and Louis Vuitton are known for their exceptional craftsmanship and limited availability, which means that certain models, especially rare or vintage ones, can become even more valuable as the years go by.
