Spring marks a reset, bringing lighter textures, fresh color, and formulas that enhance natural radiance.]]>
Japanese Spring Makeup Products

After months of cold air and heavier textures, our skin is ready for breathable bases, gentle colour and finishes that feel fresh rather than forced. Spring moves away from full coverage and sharp definition, favouring luminous skin, wearable hues and blurred, lived-in effects that enhance both complexion and mood. From soft blush tones that echo sakura palettes to diffused lip tints reflecting 2026’s blurred lip trend, the products making waves this spring are natural, expressive and easy to wear. Here are five Japanese spring makeup products for 2026 you should check out.

1. Zen Wear Stay by Decorté

It adapts to changes in temperature and humidity to keep makeup smooth and intact

The Zen Wear Stay by Decorte is a next-generation liquid foundation designed for a lightweight, glowing base. It spreads effortlessly into a thin, skin-like veil, delivering even coverage with a fresh semi-matte finish. Powered by a Smart Adaptive Structure, it adapts to changes in temperature and humidity to keep makeup smooth and intact. With SPF25/PA++ protection, water resistance and 18 shades, it offers long-lasting wear without compromising radiance.

 • Price: ¥7,700
 • Why We Recommend It: This foundation is ideal for spring when skin craves comfort and flexibility. It wears lightly while maintaining a refined finish, adding natural dimension without heaviness. With hydrating ingredients and added protection against environmental stressors, it’s a reliable choice for achieving a fresh, breathable base all day.

2. Bouncy Cheek Shadow by Kate

A gentle color payoff with smooth hue transitions, perfect for fresh, everyday spring eye looks

Kate’s Bouncy Cheek Shadow taps into spring’s soft-focus eye trend with sheer shine and natural dimension. Its matte powder–gel texture feels light and fluffy on the skin, blending seamlessly to create subtle depth without harsh definition. Featuring soft pinks, peaches, warm neutrals and muted shimmer tones, it delivers gentle color payoff with smooth hue transitions, perfect for fresh, everyday spring eye looks.

 • Price: ¥1,650
 • Why We Recommend It: This eyeshadow is ideal for adding soft definition without overpowering the eyes. The airy, bouncy texture blends effortlessly, creating a natural glow that works beautifully for everyday spring makeup and pairs well with minimal base and blurred lip looks.

3. Nuance Volume Mascara by Osaji

Subtle color nuance enhances the eyes without clumping

Part of OSAJI’s Spring 2026 collection, the Nuance Volume Mascara delivers lift, curl and definition without heaviness. Its waterproof formula adds noticeable volume while keeping lashes soft and fluffy, resisting sweat, tears and sebum for a clean finish that lasts all day. Subtle color nuance enhances the eyes without clumping, while panthenol helps maintain lash shine and strength, making it as functional as it is refined.

 • Price: ¥3,300
 • Why We Recommend It: This mascara strikes the perfect balance between definition and restraint. Pairing effortlessly with dewy skin, sheer shadows, and hybrid soft-color palettes, the result is a purposeful yet airy look. Polished enough to frame the face, but light enough to let the overall glow take center stage.

4. Complexion Face Color by Suqqu

A smooth, dewy texture that glides effortlessly over the skin

Inspired by the soft palettes of sakura season, the Complexion Face Color by Suqqu delivers a sheer, blossom-like flush with a refined glow. This liquid blends multiple oils and moisture-balancing ingredients to create a smooth, dewy texture that glides effortlessly over the skin. With finely tuned pigment levels and delicate pearl infusion, it layers thinly and evenly, allowing color to appear translucent and naturally diffused.

 • Price: ¥4,950
 • Why We Recommend It: The lightweight formula creates the impression of color emerging from within, enhancing skin tone while maintaining softness and transparency. Its moist, mist-like finish pairs beautifully with spring’s airy makeup direction, echoing the season’s gentle hues and subtle radiance.

5. Dewy Melt Lip Color by RMK

A naturally plumped, petal-soft effect that feels comfortable for everyday wear

A soft-focus lip color designed for the blurred, cloud-like lip trend of 2026. RMK’s Dewy Melt Lip Color delivers translucent shine with buildable, muted pigment that melts smoothly onto the lips. The dewy finish looks fresh and dimensional without slipping, creating a naturally plumped, petal-soft effect that feels comfortable for everyday wear.

 • Price: ¥4,180 (Case ¥1,100 Refill ¥3,080)
 • Why We Recommend It: This formula strikes a modern balance with diffused color and a gentle sheen. The subtly toned shades blend effortlessly with the skin, enhancing natural lip shape while adding moisture and softness. Ideal for pairing with dewy bases and spring’s lighter eye looks.

Luxury Japanese Skincare: What’s Worth the Price Tag? https://savvytokyo.com/luxury-japanese-skincare-whats-worth-the-price-tag/ https://savvytokyo.com/luxury-japanese-skincare-whats-worth-the-price-tag/#respond Tue, 17 Feb 2026 23:00:00 +0000 https://savvytokyo.com/?p=98707 japanese luxury skincare

A Savvy guide to which luxury J-beauty products deliver the best results for beautiful and radiant skin. ]]>
japanese luxury skincare

Japan is known for its innovative and luxurious skincare ranges that bridge the gap between science, indulgence and beauty. However, when many of these stunning products come at extravagant prices, knowing which are actually worth the high price can be tricky. In this guide, we’re breaking down the top luxury J-beauty brands, so you know which products don’t just deliver on aesthetics, but results.

Clé de Peau

Despite its French name and branding, Clé de Peau was founded in Japan in 1982 with the goal of creating beauty products that bring luxury in every aspect. At its core is the “Skin Intelligence” philosophy, which focuses on supporting the skin’s natural ability to recognise good and bad stimuli.

Worth It

1. Essential Refining Essence (コレクチュールエサンシエルn)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥10,450 for 170ml

A pore-refining lightweight essence to apply before serums. It soothes, supports the skin barrier and hydrates, using anti-inflammatory active ingredients. The essence also contains luxurious hydrolyzed silk to create an ultra-smooth sensation on the skin.

2. Hydro-Clarifying Lotion (ローションエサンシエルC)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥14,300 for 170ml

A refined, high-performance lotion that delivers weightless hydration while enhancing smoothness and complexion. The formula features aspergillus ferment, a prestige ingredient, and plant collagen to plump, condition and hydrate the skin.

3. La Crème (ラ クレーム)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥71,500 for 30g

This is the ultimate option in splurge luxury skincare. Although it comes at a high price, Clé de Peau’s La Crème moisturizer is packed full of active ingredients that target signs of ageing, uneven tone and loss of firmness, all within beautiful packaging that feels indulgent to simply pick up.

Not Worth It:

On the other hand, Clé de Peau’s serums are not quite as worth the high price point. They are still good products that feel premium to use, but they lack the high concentration of actives or unique ingredients that would justify the cost.

Shiseido

Shiseido is a heritage brand that epitomizes Japanese elegance through premium beauty products. Its skincare lines balance traditional Japanese ingredients with scientific innovation, promising to deliver noticeable skin improvements through a deeply luxurious experience.

Worth It

1. Complete Cleansing Microfoam (コンプリート クレンジングマイクロフォーム)

Shiseido-Complete Cleansing Microfoam
¥5,390 for 180ml

The cleanser might seem simpler than some of Shiseido’s other products, but its premium formula and more reasonable price point really set it apart. The microfoam cleanser has an innovative surfactant blend that keeps skin clean without disrupting the skin barrier.

2. Ultimune Power Infusing Serum (パワライジング セラム)

Shiseido-Ultimune Power Infusing Serum
¥19,800 for 75ml

One of Shiseido’s bestselling products, this serum is built around the brand’s proprietary “ImuGeneration Technology”. This innovation provably strengthens your skin’s resilience and hydration retention for long-term results that outperform other luxury serums at a similar price point.

3. Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF (パーフェクト サン プロテクター ローション)

Shiseido-Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF
¥6,600 for 50ml

This is a high-performance Japanese sunscreen that not only provides SPF50+ PA++++ protection, but also uses Shiseido’s proprietary tech to be more water-resistant than typical SPF products. It has a rich, indulgent texture on the skin, whilst also being easily absorbed and is specifically formulated to wear under makeup.

Not Worth It

Given its high price point and minimal active ingredients, we would recommend avoiding the Future Solution LX line. The products are claim to keep skin looking younger for longer, favoring traditional botanical complexes. However, these formulas have lower clinical results and feel dated compared to modern innovations like retinoids or high-strength vitamin C.

SK-II

SK-II was created after a scientist noticed the youthful appearance of a sake brewer’s hands, leading to the discovery of Pitera. This unique fermentation derivative is said to improve hydration, texture and skin clarity, which only SK-II has the right to use.

Worth It

1. Facial Treatment Essence (フェイシャル トリートメント) エッセンス)

SK-II-Facial Treatment Essence
¥12,650 for 75ml

This is not just one of SK-II’s bestselling products, but also Japan’s. It has been the top-selling toner in the country for six consecutive years and has won countless beauty and skincare awards. It contains 90% Pitera in three different forms, which deeply hydrate in a super lightweight formula that cannot be reproduced by any other company.

2. Facial Treatment Clear Lotion (フェイシャル トリートメント クリア ローション)

SK-II-Facial Treatment Clear Lotion
¥10,450 for 160ml

This toner/lotion hybrid combines AHAs with salicylic acid to gently exfoliate and cleanse pores of dead skin cells whilst hydrating. This wonderfully prepares the skin for serums and richer moisturizers, with noticeable improvements in skin texture and complexion.

3. GenOptics Infinite Aura Essence (ジェノプティクス インフィニットオーラ エッセンス)

SK-II-GenOptics Infinite Aura Essence
¥22,000 for 30ml

This product acts as a highly effective brightening serum that uses a notably functional blend of Pitera, niacinamides and amino acids to improve dullness and an uneven skin complexion. It helps skin appear more radiant and even, targeting dark spots and over-pigmentation.

Not Worth It

For us, the LXP Kintsugi Line is the least worth it of the SK-II product ranges. It is positioned at their most premium tier, but when you compare ingredients and formulas, the products don’t offer anything particularly special to justify the higher price. The packaging and feel of the products reflect the ultra-lux branding, but functionality and results are lacking.

Decorté

Decorté produces science-forward Japanese luxury skincare products that move away from reliance on an old-money aesthetic to focus on true innovation, radiance and beauty.

Worth It

1. Liposome Advanced Repair Serum (リポソーム アドバンスト リペアセラム)

Japanese Skincare
¥12,650 for 50ml

This is Decorté’s star product, which has won over 370 beauty awards and is widely considered one of the best Japanese serums on the market. It has a barrier-boosting, deeply hydrating formula that uses lipids, ceramides, ectoin and fermented extracts for provable skin results that are reflected across the Liposome line in general.

2. IP Shot Pluripotent Youth Concentrate (アイピー ショット プルリポテント ユース コンセントレイト)

Luxury Japanese Skincare
¥11,550 for 20g

An anti-wrinkle serum that provides targeted treatment to reduce signs of ageing on your skin. It combines tranexamic acid, niacinamide and antioxidants, with a formula that is able to penetrate deeply into the epidermis for cutting-edge and long-term results.

3. Whitelogist Brightening Concentrate (ホワイトロジスト クロノジェネシス ブライトニング コンセントレイト)

Japanese Skincare
¥13,200 for 30ml

If you’re looking for brighter and more radiant skin, then you need to know about this serum. Its active ingredient is kojic acid, which provably slows down melanin formation to reduce dark spots and brighten your skin’s complexion. For an even more potent option, there is a 1.8x version priced at ¥19,800 for 30ml.

Not Worth It

Unfortunately, we don’t think the Lift Dimension line delivers the same impressive results as some of Decorté’s other products. Although the textures are undeniably rich and luxurious, the formulas rely heavily on emollients and botanical extracts rather than high-impact actives that genuinely improve firmness or elasticity.

Sensai

Sensai is all about refined luxury, having been inspired by Japan’s spirit of hospitality and historical silk craftsmanship. The products are elegant, delicate and silk-infused to elevate and romanticise the daily skincare routine.

Worth It

1. Absolute Silk Micro Essence-in-Lotion (AS マイクロ エッセンスインローション)

Sensai-Absolute Silk Micro Essence-in-Lotion
¥14,300 for 125ml

An anti-ageing lotion infused with Koishimaru silk extract for velvety soft and supple skin. The product was designed with multi-layered hydration technology, leaving skin moisturized deeper and for longer than a standard lotion.

2. Ultimate The Lotion (UTM ザ ローション)

Sensai-Ultimate The Lotion
¥30,030 for 125ml

A premium lotion that goes beyond basic hydration to support skin resilience and brightness, formulated with niacinamide and barrier-friendly lipids like cholesterol and hydrogenated lecithin. It enhances the skin’s natural repair processes and strengthens the moisture barrier while delivering a rich, silky texture.

3. Silky Purifying Cleansing Oil (SP クレンジング オイル)

Sensai-Silky Purifying Cleansing Oil
¥6,490 for 150ml

The perfect first step in your double cleansing routine, this cleansing oil dissolves stubborn products gently without a stripped feel. It contains squalane and botanical extracts to leave skin soft and refreshed.

Not Worth It

Sensai’s Extra Intensive products are “nice to have” items, but we wouldn’t label them as “must-buys”. The eye cream and masks, in particular, have some lovely supportive ingredients to moisturize the skin, but lack functional, potent formulas that deliver the results you would expect at these extravagant price points.

The Right Products For Your Skin

choosing the right skincare
Take it slow and keep it simple

It’s important to remember that every person’s skin is different. What works for you might not be compatible with someone with the same complexion and areas of concern. To avoid breakouts or damaging your skin’s barrier, make sure to introduce new products one by one and remember that real results take months to appear, not days.

Drugstore Skincare in Japan: Breaking Down The Most Popular Brands & Products

Shopping for drugstore skincare in Japan is such a treat. You can find some of the most innovative, interesting and reasonably priced products in the world, that we think even rival some of the ultra-luxury brands that cost 10 times as much.

However, we also know that deciding exactly what to buy can be confusing, especially in Japanese. That’s why we’re breaking down Japan’s cult drugstore skincare favorites, so that you can confidently shop the products already loved and repurchased by the masses.

There isn’t too much you need to know before setting foot in a Japanese drugstore. Unlike some other places, 薬局 (yakkyoku; “pharmacies”) and ドラッグストア (doraggu sutoa; “drugstores”) are not the same thing in Japan. The yakkyoku is only for prescription medications, so you won’t be able to shop for skincare here.

There are plenty of different drugstores all over the country, but the most popular chains are Matsumoto Kiyoshi, Welcia and Tsuruha. You can also find all the Japanese drugstore skincare on this list and more in any Donki (along with every other Japanese souvenir imaginable).

Hada Labo

Hada Labo is easily one of the most popular skincare brands in Japan, best known for their range of colorful toner and lotion duos. Japanese toner (sometimes referred to as emulsion) differs slightly from its Western counterpart. It’s more of an ultra-lightweight moisturizing step that is applied in very thin layers before being locked in with the slightly thicker lotion (sometimes called moisture milk).

Gokujun 極潤 (White) & Gokujun Premium 極潤プレミアム (Gold)

Hada Labo’s Gokujun toners and lotions are their holy grail products. The white bottles contain the original formulation, which is made with hyaluronic acid to deeply moisturize the skin without leaving a sticky residue. If you prefer a lighter formulation that sinks into the skin faster, then you should opt for the ライトタイプ (raitotaipu; “Light Type”) lotion, or for a little more luxury, choose the gold Premium range, which uses an even more intensified, rich and moisturizing formulation.

Gokujun Aging Care 極潤薬用ハリ化粧水 (Red)

Gokujun Aging Care 極潤薬用ハリ化粧水 (Red)

The red Gokujun toner and lotion are specifically formulated to firm and plump the skin, reducing the visible signs of aging. The ingredients include three types of hyaluronic acid for deep moisturization, as well as niacinamide to minimize the appearance of fine lines.

Shirojun 白潤 (Light Blue) & Shirojun Premium 白潤プレミアム (Dark Blue)

While Gokujun focuses on moisturizing, Shirojun is all about “whitening”, meaning it brightens the skin and helps to reduce hyperpigmentation. It contains tranexamic acid, which both reduces dark spots and prevents cells from producing excess pigment in the future. The Shirojun Premium line has similar benefits, but in a richer formula that fights dullness for soft, supple and even skin.

Melano CC

Melano CC is Japan’s premier vitamin C drugstore skincare line, ideal for anyone suffering from dull and tired skin. The products contain high levels of ascorbic acid, a pure form of vitamin C that offers numerous benefits. It reduces dark spots and acne scars, boosts collagen and fights free radicals.

Vitamin C Serum & Premium Vitamin C Serum

Starting with the most well-known products, Melano CC offers these highly concentrated and unique vitamin C serums that contain an impressive amount of stabilized ascorbic acid. They’re designed to brighten dark spots, with only a few drops being needed to cover the whole face. The premium serum is similar to the original, but with additional vitamin C derivatives and moisturizing ingredients.

Vitamin C Facewash

Vitamin C Facewash

Melano CC’s face wash soared in popularity a few years ago, with people loving the way it leaves skin feeling squeaky clean, but not tight or stripped. It features a fantastic combination of unique enzymes to cleanse gently, along with intensely nourishing ingredients that both clean and care for your skin.

Nameraka Honpo

Nameraka Honpo by Sana has created a really interesting (and very popular) range of skincare products that highlight the beautifying properties of soy milk. The brand is a favorite among various age groups for its ability to promote collagen production and hydrate the skin, resulting in an impressive anti-aging effect.

Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream

Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream drugstore skincare

The Soy Milk Wrinkle Eye Cream is easily one of the brand’s best-selling products, having also won multiple awards for its ability to reduce fine lines and firm the under-eye skin. It packs a hydration punch with multiple moisturizing ingredients, as well as the rejuvenating properties of soymilk isoflavones and the anti-aging benefits of both retinol and a retinoid.

Soy Milk Wrinkle Night Cream

Soy Milk Wrinkle Night Cream

This thick and luxurious night cream has all the benefits of the wrinkle eye cream, plus additional ceramides to stimulate cell turnover and strengthen the skin barrier. It’s a fantastic product, particularly for drier skin types, that leaves skin feeling soft and not sticky.

Soy Milk Medicated Wrinkle Serum

Soy Milk Medicated Wrinkle Serum

There’s no cutting corners when it comes to this serum. The ingredient list includes lactic acid to exfoliate gently, retinol to boost blood flow and collagen production, and niacinamide to help restore the skin’s barrier. It works to achieve long-term, firmer and plumper skin, in gentle enough dosages to avoid irritation or inflammation.

Bioré

Bioré is a brand that is widely recognized throughout Japan (and now the world), thanks to its innovative products, particularly its sunscreens. The brand has placed a strong emphasis on making all its products as enjoyable and straightforward to use as possible, while also being some of the most budget-friendly Japanese skincare items available.

The Cleanse Oil Make Up Remover

The Cleanse Oil Make Up Remover drugstore skincare

If you’re looking for a simple, affordable and easy-to-use cleansing oil to break down makeup, debris and SPF, then this is the product for you. It’s also award-winning, having placed first in the 2023 LDK’s beauty awards in the cleansing oil category.

The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers

The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers

Bioré is all about the double cleanse, recommending you follow oil cleansing by using one of The Face Foaming Facial Cleansers. This range of foamy face washes features five different, colorful types, making it easy to select the right product for your skin. There’s moist (blue), deep moist (pink), acne care (green), oil control (purple) and smooth clear (yellow).

UV Aqua Rich

UV Aqua Rich

You can’t talk about Bioré without mentioning their UV Aqua Rich line of sunscreens. These are the absolute bestsellers in Japan that are as light as water on the skin, quickly absorbed and leave minimal whitecast. The Bioré UV Aqua Rich Water Essence is the most popular formulation, but there are also mist, sweat-resistant and child-friendly formulas.

Curél

Curél offers some of the gentlest Japanese skincare products on the market, which are highly effective yet very affordable. People with sensitive skin especially love the range, as potentially inflammatory ingredients are avoided and replaced with simple, calming alternatives.

Moisturizing Foam Facial Cleanser

Moisturizing Foam Facial Cleanser drugstore skincare

This is an excellent product for anyone seeking a gentle face wash that won’t irritate or strip the skin. It’s alcohol, silicon, oil, sulfate and fragrance free, and lathers into a luxuriously creamy foam that delicately washes your skin, leaving it feeling soft to the touch.

Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream

Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream

The Intensive Moisturizing Face Cream does exactly as the name suggests. The ingredients include allantoin, which is highly effective in reducing redness and irritation, while tocopherol helps maintain your natural skin lipids, promoting a healthy and strong skin barrier.

Moisture Lip Care Cream

Moisture Lip Care Cream

It’s a bold statement, but this might just be one of the best lip balms in Japan. This super-affordable lip cream utilizes squalane to help your lips retain moisture more effectively, making it a must-try, especially during Japan’s severe winter dryness.

Why Is Japanese Drugstore Skincare So Good?

Tokyo, Japan - April 09, 2023: drugstore at Akihabara in the Chiyoda district in Tokyo. The nickname of this area is Electric Town, renowned as an Anime and Manga shopping district© Photo by iStock: chris-mueller

It’s hard to believe that Japanese drugstore skincare can be affordable, readily available and genuinely effective…but trust us, it’s true! The reason behind this is that J-beauty has an entirely different approach to skincare formulation than in the West. It’s all about balance and gentle, long-term results, rather than fast-working actives that can be expensive and irritating to the skin.

Which of these drugstore skincare products will you try first?

When you treat your bathroom as a sacred space, it will become your haven of peace.]]>
Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen

Approximately 14 million people live in Tokyo, so space is, understandably, at a premium. And if you look at the modern apartments in this bustling city, you’ll notice that most of them have a similar interior design—classic white walls, faux wood flooring and off-white bathrooms. Speaking of the latter, a Tokyo apartment bathroom is often compact, functional and (between us) a little monotonous. However, if you look closer, you will find beauty in monotony.

With a creative spirit, you can transform your small bathroom into a serene haven with these aesthetically pleasing products. Allow me to show you how!

Set The Vibe With Candles

Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen

Greetings from my Tokyo bathroom! As you can see, I’ve decorated the room with candles and artificial plants. I intended to create a space that would allow me to recharge and rejuvenate after a long day at work. The LED candles are from Ikea. I think they add a sense of coziness to the space. To create a spa-like experience at home, I often turn off my bathroom lights, play some lo-fi music and put these candles on while I indulge in a relaxing soak and sip on green tea.

 • Price: ¥1,499
 • Buy: Ikea

Add Sakura Petals To Your Bath

Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen

If you’re obsessed with Japanese cherry blossoms, then you will surely love this Sakura Bath Confetti from Loft. Sprinkle a handful into your bath and the water will slowly transform into a blissful shade of pink. It’s the perfect pick-me-up product when you’re feeling under the weather.

 • Price: ¥350
 • Buy: Loft

Pamper Your Skin With Honey

Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen

This luxury body wash from Hacci is one of my favorites to use when I want to pamper myself. The mellow honey scent is soothing and it makes the skin feel smooth and smell delicious.

 • Price: ¥4,950
 • Buy: Hacci

Mini Plants For The Win

Mini Plants For The Win

I’m a big fan of artificial plants. They’re low maintenance and look like the real deal. I placed these cute succulents on my bathroom rack to add instant color to my plain white bathroom. It’s a minor detail that contributes to the overall low-key Zen aesthetic.

 • Price: ¥299
 • Buy: Ikea

Bathe With Yuzus

Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen Bathe With Yuzus

You don’t have to visit a sento (public bathhouse) to enjoy a yuzu bath. You can recreate the same experience at home! Yuzus are available throughout the year in Japan; you can buy them at supermarkets or order them online. Bathing with these aromatic citrus fruits will help melt away stress and elevate your mood.

Note: If you can’t find yuzu fruit at the supermarket, they also offer a bath salt versions.

 • Price: ¥1,000
 • Buy: Amazon

Buff Away Those Dead Skin Cells

Buff Away Those Dead Skin Cells

Most body scrubs in the market today are either too harsh or too fragrant. Some of them could even irritate your skin and cause it to flare up. This one from Sabon is the perfect product for sensitive skin. It is a cult favorite among Japanese women for its powerful scent. A bit pricey, but worth every yen! It contains almond and jojoba oil. Not only does it exfoliate your skin to perfection, but it also leaves your skin smelling divine.

 • Price: ¥3,740
 • Buy: Sabon

Try Dry Brushing

Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen Try Dry Brushing

Japanese washcloths are physical exfoliators made from nylon and polyester. You can use them with or without soap and water to cleanse your body. It is like dry brushing if you use them without water. Besides exfoliating the skin, dry brushing with this washcloth helps improve blood circulation, elevates your mood and makes your skin feel softer and smoother. Living in Tokyo, I’d recommend dry brushing once or twice a week.

Organize Your Bath Salts

Organize Your Bath Salts

Bath salts and tablets are readily available and affordable in Japan. I like to keep mine in this large bowl. You can also store them in baskets and mason jars. The idea is to spread them out to know how many are with you. Depending on the size of your bathroom, you can choose the container that is best suited to storing your bath products.

 • Price: ¥1,430
 • Buy: Amazon

Invest In A Reed Diffuser

Invest In A Reed Diffuser Turn Your Tokyo Apartment's Bathroom Into a Cozy Place of Zen

A reed diffuser in your bathroom will make the room smell fresh at all times. Unlike candles and electric diffusers, they don’t burn or require power to work. The one in the picture is from Daiso (yes, Daiso stores in Japan now sell reed diffusers as well!) If you’re looking for fresh scents in your bathroom, consider lavender, musk, eucalyptus, lemongrass, tea tree, citrus and rosemary. These scents will make you feel relaxed throughout the day.

 • Price: ¥1,800
 • Buy: Daiso

Bath Bombs For A Luxurious Soak

Bath Bombs For A Luxurious Soak

Lush is one of the best places to shop for bath bombs in Japan. While they offer a variety of them, keep an eye out for the ones exclusive to Japan. I recommend their Temple in the Sky bath bomb. It depicts a sparkly golden Japanese temple and has a fresh citrus scent.

I wrote this story to inspire you to transform your cozy Tokyo apartment bathroom space into a sanctuary. If you have more creative design ideas, please share them in the comments below. I’m excited to read yours!

Shicchy’s Charity Fair: Designer Discount Paradise

Last month, a Parisian friend told me about a huge designer sale outside of Tokyo’s fashion shopping districts. Here, she claimed, I could nab both vintage and on-trend pieces from brands like Louis Vuitton, Chanel and Hermès at incredible discounts. This event was Shicchy’s Charity Fair, at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center.

I wanted to get my hands on products that would typically be lightyears beyond my retail budget. As a pawnbroking event, the fair also sounded like an excellent way to shop for sustainable fashion. And if some of the money went to charity, all the better. So, I decided to check it out.

Here’s everything you need to know about Shicchy’s Charity Fair and the products you can find there. Plus, what happened when I went bargain hunting.

What Is Shicchy’s Charity Fair?

Shicchy’s Charity Fair is a bi-annual bargain sales event offering discounts of 30% to 90% on luxury fashion goods. First held in 1972, the fair is now one of the biggest pawnbroker events in Japan, with around 100,000 items on offer. The event is held twice a year at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center near Haneda Airport. Louis Vuitton, Hermès, Prada, Gucci and Tiffany’s are just a few of the brands shoppers can expect to find.

As the name suggests, Shicchy’s Charity Fair donates a portion of its profits to charitable causes around Japan. Past causes the fair has supported include the Japan Committee for UNICEF and numerous disaster-relief efforts nationwide.

I arrived at the Tokyo Ryutsu Center shortly after the event opened at 10 a.m. Huge rows of people were lined up outside the building, waiting to be allowed inside. After 30 minutes in the queue, it was finally my turn.

The sales floor was organized into sections for clothing, jewelry and watches, accessories and electronics, subdivided by brand. Beyond that, it was a free-for-all. Shoppers jostled to pick through piles of handbags or catch the attention of sales staff. At first, it was a bit overwhelming. However, with a little patience, I was able to get a good look at the items on offer.

Sales staff wore sashes indicating which languages they spoke, in addition to Japanese, including English. All were very helpful when it came to showing me pieces I wanted to take a closer look at. But when I asked where I might find specific products, they politely told me I was on my own!

Louis Vuitton was undoubtedly the star of the event, with smaller selections from brands such as Chanel, Prada, Gucci and others. I was able to buy two vintage Louis Vuitton pouches in the ¥30,000 to ¥50,000 range for my Paris friend. I also found her a stunning silk scarf from Hermès for ¥39,800. Lastly, I treated myself to a cute Michael Kors handbag for a modest ¥16,000.

Was it Worth it?

While a few items at Shicchy’s Charity Fair could be considered cheap, there are definitely some impressive discounts on offer. If you’re drawn to designer brands but find their products are usually just out of reach price-wise, then the Fair is definitely worth a trip.

Winter has officially arrived and Tokyo is wrapping itself in outerwear that’s warm, stylish and full of character. Here’s what’s trending.]]>

The city is transforming into a blend of frosty mornings, glowing illuminations and effortlessly stylish outerwear. It’s the season when fashion becomes as functional as it is expressive, and following the right coat trends can define your entire cold-weather look as winter settles over Tokyo.

Known as 冬支度 (fuyu-jitaku), the act of preparing for winter, this time of year invites thoughtful layering, plush textures and refined silhouettes that elevate even the simplest everyday outfit. Think oversized wool coats that sway with every step, padded jackets that feel like wearable duvets and tailored outerwear that adds structure to the season’s cozy chaos.

Whether you’re navigating icy commutes, strolling through festive markets or simply refreshing your winter wardrobe, these are the five coat trends keeping Tokyo stylish and snug this year!

1. Ultra-Long Coats

This season, ultra-long wool and wool-blend coats are making a statement, combining elegance with everyday functionality. Classic neutrals, such as black, gray and beige, dominate, but check and tartan patterns are also trending, reimagined in relaxed, cozy and polished designs that feel modern rather than preppy. For Tokyo women aiming for timeless style with a contemporary twist, these maxi coats are a must-have this winter.

Maximize drama and elegance by wearing your ultra-long coat open over a sleek, monochrome outfit. Think fitted turtlenecks and wide-leg trousers. Add a statement belt to define your waist or create a flowing silhouette. Pointed ankle boots and a structured tote will elevate the look for both office and evening outings. Experiment with textures, like a soft cashmere scarf or suede gloves, to add subtle sophistication.

2. Scarf Coat

Scarf coats, featuring built-in scarves or attached wrap pieces, are having a major moment in Tokyo right now. Japanese fashion is highlighting statement outerwear that blends practicality with refined design, keeping you warm while looking effortlessly chic. From wrap-style scarf coats to sleek options like the Theory Wool Divide Scarf Coat, these pieces offer a modern, elegant silhouette that perfectly fits Tokyo women’s desire for versatile, stylish winter outerwear.

Use the built-in scarf as the centerpiece of your outfit. Pair with slim leather pants or tailored culottes to balance volume. A pop of color in shoes or earrings will keep the ensemble modern without feeling heavy.

3. Lightweight Functional Coats with Smart Insulation

Japanese fashion trends are highlighting outerwear that blends practicality with high-performance design, offering warmth without heavy bulk. From sleek, minimalist silhouettes to sporty, technical styles, smart-insulated coats are not just practical. They’re a fashion-forward choice that signals an awareness of both style and sustainable, utilitarian design.

Incorporate metallic or reflective accessories like a belt bag or subtle hardware detailing for a contemporary, urban vibe. This coat is perfect for layering creatively without adding bulk.

4. Boa, Faux Shearling Coats

Cozy, tactile and effortlessly stylish, plush textures like boa and faux shearling coats combine warmth with modern design. From sleek, short styles to long, boa coats, they now offer polished silhouettes that appeal to adults seeking comfort without bulk. Lightweight yet insulating, and with versatile colors and shapes, boa coats are a must-have this season, offering a contemporary twist on winter layering.

Add tactile accessories, such as a leather crossbody or knit beanie, to complement the coat’s cozy feel. For a chic weekend look, pair it with oversized cropped denim and platform boots, allowing the coat’s tactile texture to become the focal point of your outfit.

5. Leather Bombers

Making a strong mark on Tokyo street style this winter, leather bombers blend retro cool with modern sophistication. Far from a classic staple, leather outerwear, especially relaxed, oversized or mid-length cuts, is one of the hottest trends for 2025. From sleek blousons to reinterpreted bomber silhouettes, leather jackets are being celebrated as versatile, street-style relevant pieces that combine fashion-forward design with urban practicality.

Layer your bomber over a printed silk blouse or patterned knit for visual interest, and pair with straight-leg trousers or a pleated skirt to soften the edgy silhouette. Complete the look with chunky sneakers or leather loafers, and add minimal metallic jewelry to keep it sleek and refined. A crossbody bag with hardware details will tie the street-style aesthetic together effortlessly.

10 Japanese Self Care Tips For Protecting Your Skin During Winter https://savvytokyo.com/saving-face-japanese-tips-soft-glowing-skin-winter/ https://savvytokyo.com/saving-face-japanese-tips-soft-glowing-skin-winter/#respond Wed, 19 Nov 2025 23:00:00 +0000 https://savvytokyo.com/?p=28624 Young woman wearing a blanket and holding a mug

As the temperature drops, so, too, does the level of moisture in the air. Don't let the colder weather cause stress for your skin—fight back with these self-care remedies.]]>

Despite how much we bundle up, winter weather is never fun for our skin. Winter in Japan requires us to move between indoor and outdoor environments throughout the day, whether stepping out of a roasting train carriage onto an exposed platform, moving from a stuffy office to a coffee meeting or dragging ourselves from under the kotatsu (heated blanket table) for an outdoor run.

Repeated exposure to cold temperatures combined with low humidity levels results in extremely dry air, which can leave our skin parched, itchy and even cracked. Proper care is crucial to getting through the next few months—you’ll need to give your skin a little extra tender, loving care to counteract the effects of winter skin woes.

The good news is that there is a myriad of Japanese products and practices to help you maintain soft and glowing skin. Here are our top tips to keep you looking flawless and fire—no matter how cold it is!

1. Take A Warm (Not Hot) Bath

When it comes to Japanese beauty and health secrets, taking warm baths is definitely a must-do. During cold nights, it’s hard to say no to a long, hot soak, but as the weather becomes cooler, it’s essential to ensure you don’t turn up the water temperature too high, as it will strip away the essential oils in your skin, resulting in even more damage. The best way to avoid this is to soak in water at a temperature of around 38-40°C for just 10 minutes.

The exception to this is natural onsen (hot springs), which are filled with specific minerals and other properties that counteract the drying effects of excessively hot water and are actually very beneficial for winter skin. If you can, schedule some me-time with a day trip to a nearby onsen; there are plenty of breathtaking resorts all over Japan.

2. Moisturize All Over While Damp

During the winter months, it’s essential to allocate a little extra time to your bathing routine to thoroughly moisturize your body immediately after washing. Applying moisturizer to damp skin helps seal that moisture in and prevent your skin from drying out during the day.

But before you start, it’s essential to know what’s really in the product you’re using. Some active moisturizing ingredients to look out for include:

ヒト型セラミド (hitogata seramido; “human-type ceramide”)

Such as ceramide NP, ceramide AP and ceramide EOP: These mimic the skin’s own lipids and help repair and strengthen the barrier so moisture stays locked in. They are especially helpful if your skin feels tight or dehydrated.

ヘパリノイド (heparinoido; “heparinoid”)

A 医薬部外品 (iyakubugaihin; “quasi-drug”) ingredient that not only hydrates but also calms mild inflammation. It helps reduce itching and redness caused by dryness, making the skin more comfortable overall.

アミノ酸系保湿成分 (amino san-kei hoshitsu seibun; “amino acid moisturizing ingredients”)

Such as glycine, alanine and PCA-Na: These are part of the skin’s 天然保湿因子 (tennen hoshitsu inshi; “natural moisturizing factor”), which help skin hold onto water so it stays soft and plump.

エモリエント成分 (emoriento seibun; “emollient ingredients”)

Such as vaseline, squalane and shea butter: These form a thin protective layer on the skin’s surface to prevent water from evaporating. They are especially effective during winter when the air is dry.

Some body lotions and creams include 石油系成分 (sekiyu-kei seibun; “petroleum-based ingredients”) that may dry out the skin further in colder months. If you’re sensitive to these, look for products labeled オーガニック (ōganikku; “organic”) or オイルイン (oiru in; “oil-in”) for gentler, more nourishing formulas. These organic beauty stores offer a wide range of natural Japanese and imported products.

If you have very dry or sensitive skin, you should probably also choose products labeled:

 • アルコール[エタノール]フリー (arukōru [etanōru] furī; “alcohol [ethanol]-free”)
 • 無香料 (mukōryō; “fragrance-free”)
 • 無着色 (muchakushoku; “coloring-free”)

For more skin care recommendations, explore our various articles for skincare tailored to your specific skin type.

3. Exfoliate But Don’t Scrub

We often forget to help our skin slough off dead cells in the winter, particularly on our hands and feet. To truly maximize the effectiveness of your moisturizing routine, make sure a buildup of dead skin cells doesn’t block the areas you’re applying extra hydration to. This is why gentle exfoliation, about once or twice a week on the face, body, hands and feet, is so important.

When exfoliating, remember that friction can easily irritate sensitive skin in winter. Rubbing too hard puts unnecessary strain on the skin, accelerates dryness and weakens the barrier function, which can lead to rough or flaky patches. Any time you touch your skin, whether you’re cleansing, exfoliating or applying skincare, handle it as gently as you would a soft piece of tofu.

Choose an exfoliating mask or cream explicitly designed for the face, as these formulas are milder and better suited for colder months when your skin is more vulnerable.

Goodbye Keana’s baking soda wash strikes just the right balance between “scratching my face off” and “ooh, my pores are so clean.” However, if we’re recommending just one, opt for Cure Natural Aqua Gel for its proven gentle exfoliation and strong reputation in the J-beauty world.

Use it once or twice a week, depending on your skin sensitivity, and then follow immediately with the moisturizing routine above. You’ll feel noticeably smoother and refreshed—just in time for the new year.

4. Cover Up & Protect Your Skin

Get into the habit of wearing gloves, scarves and hats to protect your skin from wind, rain and even snow. When choosing what to wear overall, opt for materials that don’t irritate the skin and reduce friction, which helps prevent dryness and other skin problems.

Friction and static electricity can damage the 角質層 (kakushitsu-sō; “outermost skin layer”), or the stratum corneum, which is the protective barrier that keeps moisture in and harmful substances out. Soft, natural fabrics like cotton, silk or baby alpaca will feel gentle against the skin. They’re also the best choice for items that come into direct contact with your skin, such as masks or underwear.

Winter SPF Is Crucial!

Don’t forget to continue your usual sun protection routine even in the colder months. Winter sunshine can be just as damaging—if not more—than the summer sun. Skiers and snowboarders beware: Reflection from those icy slopes can be significantly worse than simply being out and about in the city, so a waterproof SPF 50+ sunscreen is highly recommended.

As for clothing recommendations, we recently introduced a list of sustainable fashion brands in Japan that use natural materials, so be sure to check that out as well.

5. Humidify Your Home

Winter heating can make indoor air painfully dry, which dries out your skin and hair faster than you’d think. Using a humidifier or essential oil diffuser is an easy way to add moisture back into the air. It will not only keep your skin soft and vibrant, but it may also help you avoid getting sick. Have a partner who snores? Humidity may also be the solution to that particular problem as well.

Aim for a room humidity of 40 to 60 percent. Low humidity can dry out your skin, while excessive moisture can cause sweat, disrupt your skin’s natural balance and even encourage mold growth. On that note, you’ll also want to keep your home temperature around 20 to 25 degrees Celsius, as being too cold can slow blood circulation, and being too hot can trigger excess oil production.

If you’re currently low on funds and can’t afford a whole new machine, there are also some very simple natural ways to boost humidity in your home:

 • Dry your towels and laundry indoors: Ensure there is sufficient space for air to circulate, and consider using an antibacterial detergent for indoor use to help prevent odors.
 • After bathing, leave the bathroom door open to let the extra steam flow into the room: Be mindful of condensation or mold. You may also want to skip this one in terms of safety if you have any small children.
 • Have nabe (hot pot) for breakfast, lunch and dinner: Having a pot of nabe simmering will naturally release some moisture into the air; a herbal simmer pot works just as well, too!

6. Stay Hydrated

During the winter months, it’s easy to forget to drink enough fluids as we opt for plenty of warm drinks like cocoa, coffee and tea. Remember that your skin needs to be hydrated from the inside out, so carry a water bottle with you wherever you go.

Not sure how much water you should drink per day? According to Dr. Sawako Hibino, a physician and dermatologist, as well as the general director of Sawako Clinic x YS, “you should ideally drink around one and a half to two liters per day, but the specific amount varies depending on your age and weight.”

Here’s how to calculate it:

Your Weight (kg) x (*) = Daily fluid requirement (mL)
*Under 30 years old: 40mL; 30-55 years old: 35mL; 56 years old or older: 30mL

For example, if you’re in your 20s and weigh around 60kg (60kg x 40mL), you’ll need to drink around 2,400mL. A 40-year-old at the same weight (60kg x 35mL) would need 2,100mL, and someone in their 60s at the same weight will only need 1,800mL.

If that sounds like a lot, keep in mind that the amount also includes fluids you get from food, so you don’t necessarily need to drink the whole amount in water. If you prefer hot beverages, opt for green tea or, even better, matcha, as it’s high in catechins, which are naturally occurring antioxidants that also possess anti-inflammatory and anticancer properties.

Try to consume as much of the fluids in the morning and during the first half of your day, as this is the body’s prime time for detoxification and fluid elimination.

7. Take In The Right Nutrients

Eating well during winter isn’t just about staying healthy; it’s one of the best ways to keep your skin glowing from the inside out. A solid winter skincare routine should really start on your plate, and, luckily, Japan has so many meals that naturally incorporate many nutrient-dense ingredients.

Ever wondered how so many people, especially elderly women, in Japan tend to have such young, healthy-looking skin? If you ask them their secret, many would advise that it all begins with their diet.

From seasonal produce at your local supermarket to traditional staple Japanese superfoods like natto, miso, seaweed, tofu and a wide range of fresh winter vegetables, everyday meals here are built around balance and variety. To keep your skin hydrated and resilient, make sure you’re getting the proper nutrients throughout the season.

Here are the key vitamins to focus on and what to eat to get them naturally:

Vitamin A

Helps protect the skin and mucous membranes.

 • What to eat: liver, unagi (eel), egg yolks, kabocha (Japanese pumpkin), spinach, carrots, sweet potato and other green and yellow vegetables

Vitamin E

Prevents lipid oxidation and supports smoother, more supple skin.

 • What to eat: almonds, sunflower seeds and other nuts, vegetable and sesame oil, avocado, spinach, salmon and mackerel

Vitamin B2

Supports healthy skin cell turnover.

Vitamin C

Essential for collagen production and overall skin strength.

 • What to eat: persimmons, lemons, mandarin oranges, yuzu, strawberries, kiwis, broccoli, bell peppers, daikon and other greens and yellow vegetables

Don’t Forget Protein!

Think of protein as your skin’s construction team—constantly repairing, rebuilding and supporting the structure that keeps everything smooth, firm and resilient. Since our bodies are composed of roughly 20 percent protein, it plays a significant role in maintaining healthy skin.

It supports collagen production, strengthens the skin’s natural barrier and helps your complexion bounce back from dryness and external irritation.

If you read our summer feature on natsubate (summer fatigue), you’ll recall how different ingredients can warm or cool the body according to Eastern holistic nutrition principles. In winter, warming—or yang—foods take center stage.

Most protein sources like fish, meat and soy-based dishes fall into this category, helping keep your circulation flowing. Better circulation means your skin gets the nutrients it needs to stay supple, not flaky.

 • What to eat: Fish, chicken, pork, tofu, eggs, miso, edamame, mackerel, whitebait, soy milk

If your schedule is packed (and let’s be honest, whose isn’t?), you may not always hit every nutrient naturally. In that case, adding supplements or daily vitamins can help fill in the gaps—preferably as a last resort, though.

8. Take Advantage Of Japan’s Winter Beauty Gadgets

From mini steamers to heated insoles, these innovative tools in Japan don’t just keep you cozy—they actively support circulation, boost hydration and help your skincare products work harder. Think of it as giving your skin a warm hug from the inside out. Even better? Many of these gadgets are affordable, easy to use at home and feel very luxurious after a long, chilly day.

We actually have an article that lists a variety of unique Japanese goods to warm you up this winter, so be sure to check it out. And if you’re after even weirder yet wonderful Japanese beauty gadgets, we have those covered too.

9. Get Your Beauty Rest

Of all the winter skincare tips, this one might be the easiest to overlook: good sleep is genuinely one of the best beauty treatments you can give yourself. When you sleep well, your body releases growth hormone, which supports healthy cell turnover—essentially helping your skin repair, renew and stay resilient.

When you don’t get enough rest, cortisol can rise, disrupting the turnover of your skin’s protective outer layer. This can reduce sebum production, weaken the skin barrier and leave your complexion looking dull or irritated.

And like some other tips on this list, this advice isn’t unique to Japan either. Japan does, however, make it easier to put into practice with various products, similar to the ones mentioned above, designed for nighttime relaxation. You’ll find a huge range of fun and genuinely effective sleep-supporting products at most variety shops and drug stores for a heavenly night’s sleep.

Aim for seven to eight hours of restful sleep to improve blood circulation and promote skin regeneration.

10. Time To Relax (& Maybe Get A Beauty Treatment)

Just For Fun: The Beauty Salon© Photo by iStock: mapo

Relaxation isn’t just a luxury; it’s one of the most underrated essentials for healthy skin. When you’re stressed, your body produces more cortisol, which can slow down cell turnover, weaken the skin barrier and make dryness even worse. Taking time to decompress can have a visible, almost immediate effect on how your skin feels and looks.

Begin with simple, at-home habits that naturally help your body unwind, allowing your nervous system and complexion to reset:

 • A warm bath before bed (remember—38 to 40 degrees for 10 minutes)
 • Gentle stretching or yoga
 • Deep breathing exercises
 • Using some Japanese essential oils
 • Sipping a herbal tea
 • Five quiet minutes with your phone on airplane mode

Truly Treat Yourself

If you want to take it one step further, winter is an ideal time to consider a professional beauty treatment. Of course, it’s completely optional, but a session at a salon can help revive dull, dehydrated skin while giving you the kind of deep relaxation that’s hard to replicate at home. Plus, letting someone else massage away the tension while applying hydrating masks and warm towels is a pretty blissful way to spend an afternoon during the cold winter season.

Beauty salons across Japan offer special winter menus designed to combat seasonal dryness, from moisture-rich facials to aromatherapy treatments. If you’re curious to try one, check out our list of the best beauty salons in Tokyo, or try a Japanese beauty booking app like Hot Pepper Beauty or Rakuten Beauty to book something nationwide.

We hope you can keep your skin happy, hydrated and radiant all season long. Ready to put these tips into action? Start small by trying one ritual today and see the difference for yourself!

Double-Cleansing: The Best Japanese Oil & Water Cleansers For Every Skin Type

Double cleansing might seem like a 21st-century TikTok trend, but it has actually been practiced by women in Japan and Korea since the 1300s. The ritual was later perfected by Geisha, who relied on it to maintain their beautiful skin beneath layers of traditional makeup.

Their method involved two steps: first, using oil to break down the thick makeup, then following with a gentle rice-bran wash to remove any residue. It was (and continues to be) of the utmost importance for these women to be able to maintain their heavy makeup routine without it having adverse effects on their skin condition.

The technique doesn’t require any fancy products or expensive equipment, but it can result in beautifully radiant skin. Continue reading to discover the top Japanese skincare products for double cleansing and learn how to incorporate this technique into your routine.

What Is Double Cleansing?

Double cleansing is a skincare technique where, instead of simply washing your face quickly in the evening, you use both oil-based and water-based cleansers to achieve clean and mochi-soft skin. The two-step cleansing style effectively cleanses your skin of all makeup residue, dirt and excess oil, eliminating the need for harsh chemicals or scrubbing.

This should be the first step of your evening skincare routine, which, with the right products and the proper application, will leave your skin feeling fresh, soft and radiant.

Step One: Oil Cleansing

One of the most essential qualities of makeup and facial SPF is that they need to be somewhat waterproof in order to withstand sweat, rain and the general wear of a twelve-hour day. To achieve this, these products are formulated so that they do not break down just in water. That’s why using an oil-based cleanser as your first step is so essential: it removes heavy product on the skin without you having to scrub and potentially irritate your face.

Step Two: Water-Based Wash

Even after washing away your oil-based cleanser, you may still notice a slight slick or residue on your skin. That’s where the water-based face wash comes in. This second cleansing step works to clean your skin of any buildup, oil-resistant product or oil-cleanser residue for perfectly clean skin. Skip this step, and you risk blocked pores and even breakouts.

Double Cleansing For Sensitive Skin

With sensitive skin, every added product can pose a risk of irritation or reaction, but what’s more concerning is the impact of leaving product buildup on your skin overnight. For a sensitive-skin-friendly routine, look for cleansing products with simple ingredients, avoiding those that contain exfoliating agents.

Double Cleansing For Dry Skin

For individuals with dry skin, cleansing can be a daunting skincare step that strips away natural oils, leaving the face feeling tight and uncomfortable. However, with the right products, double cleansing can actually help moisturise the skin. Prioritize ingredients like ヒアルロン酸 (hiaruron san; “hyaluronic acid”), which helps hydrate while cleansing, and スクアラン (sukuaran; “squalane”), which encourages the skin to retain moisture.

The Art Of Japanese Skincare

Antique Japanese Illustration: Two women by Torii Kiyonaga© Photo by iStock: ilbusca

Unlike Western skincare practices, Japanese products and techniques are designed with a focus on balance and gentleness. Generally, J-beauty products are less about active ingredients and dramatic results, and are designed to work with your skin in its current condition, supporting it for long-term beauty and radiance.

Everyone’s skin is different, and the exact same product will likely work differently on two people, even if they have the same skin type. The key is to introduce new skincare steps carefully and one at a time.

If you are trying out the double cleanse for the first time, take care to limit other new products and techniques for at least a month. Skin time to adjust, with the real benefits of the double cleanse technique showing across months and years, not hours or days.

What products do you use in your double cleansing routine?

Afro-hair care can be complicated while living overseas, but with some careful research your hair can thrive—just like back home.]]>
A Guide to Hair Products, Salons and Afro Hair Care in Tokyo

Japanese hair salons are renowned for their precision and exceptional service. Even a simple bob cut can take hours as stylists carefully perfect every angle before recommending the best products to maintain your look. But when it comes to afro-hair care in Tokyo, the experience isn’t always as straightforward.

While Japan’s salon culture is renowned for its attention to detail, many individuals with afro-textured hair struggle to access the same level of care. Spend just a few minutes in a typical beauty aisle and you’ll notice that most products cater to straight hair, often marketed to “tame” frizz or curliness—leaving those with natural textures searching for alternatives that actually work for them.

Salons in Japan often lack the training and resources to accommodate individuals with afro-hair. They frequently resort to recommending straightening treatments or outright refusing service. However, as awareness of Black and African cultures increases in Japan, we’re finding more and more stylists and products that cater to the sensitive needs of the Afro-hair community, especially in big cities like Tokyo.

Shopping For Hair Products

The limited availability of salons specializing in Afro-hair care in Tokyo often prompts many people to take care of their hair at home with simple styling techniques.

Shampoo & Conditioner

You likely won’t find Shea Moisture or Aunt Jackie’s in any physical store here, but you’ll still be able to partake in using shampoos, conditioners, oils and even hair treatments. Product lines such as the Tsubaki Premium Moist Shampoo and Conditioner, as well as the Pantene Rich Moisture Shampoo and Conditioner, are highly recommended for curly and afro-textured hair.

Hair Masks & Shops To Check

As for hair masks, the Fino Premium Touch is highly recommended for all hair types in Japan. Stores like Ales Shop, while still limited in their selection, offer hair products such as extensions, creams, sprays, accessories and so much more for both straight and afro-hair textures. I highly recommend visiting the store in Shibuya, as their online shop doesn’t carry everything they have.

N Brand is produced by the Nepenji Hair Salon, known for its Devacurl treatment. The brand was specifically designed for individuals with curly and coarse hair. Lush and The Body Shop stores are also readily available international brands in Japan that offer ethically produced body products for people with all hair and skin types.

Aside from buying locally, there are also a few stores that ship international products to Japan. The prices tend to be a little higher than what you would expect in your home country, but it’s often the sacrifice you make when living overseas.

Connect With Local Salons

Despite the difficulty in finding Afro-hair stylists in Japan, some residents have taken up the challenge to cater specifically to the needs of the Afro-hair community.

Salons such as Roppongi The Room 806 have been around for years, with an extensive list of clients ranging from residents to celebrities, and provide excellent space and service for afro-hair care.

Other hair salons and barbers have been emerging slowly over the years as demand for additional hair services increases. A perk about visiting Black-owned hair salons is that many of them carry international brands specific to afro-hair, such as T.G.I.N., Shea Moisture and much more.

It’s also important not to disregard the Japanese-owned salons that have stylists with specialized training in afro-hair styling. While the price range does tend to be higher compared to smaller salons, the service you receive often matches the price. Unfortunately, these Afro-hair salons are typically located in Japan’s larger cities. There may be smaller salons in local areas as well, but it’s more of an “if you know, you know” situation.

Connect With The Community

Regardless of the salons you visit or the number of products you order online, nothing trumps having a solid connection with your community.

Special interest groups not only provide resources on afro-hair care but also a space to discuss culturally sensitive topics, share stories and allow us to learn from and support each other as we build a community here in Japan. More importantly, you’re able to connect with people who look similar to you and can relate to you on a much deeper level outside of hair care.

Facebook groups such as Black Women in Japan, Black in Japan and Black Creatives Japan all provide resources and support for people of the African diaspora to connect with each other. Here you’ll find tips and resources on what others are doing for their own afro-hair care regimen and you might find yourself coming in contact with local hairstylists. These are also the groups that will help provide DIY recipes for how to create products at home, offer reviews of hair salons in Japan and even offer tutorials on how to style your hair.

As the wider Japanese community becomes more aware of Afro-hair care practices, we’re seeing many organizations offering more inclusive services to address the concerns of their community better. Organizations such as the Legacy Foundation Japan and HBA Beauty Academy offer culturally inclusive classes to parents of children with Afro-hair, teaching them proper care and styling techniques.

More Interests for People from the African Diaspora:

Afro-hair does require some extra attention for proper care, but that shouldn’t stop you from enjoying yourself while living in Japan. You likely won’t be able to experience a lot of the same comforts you had back home, but that just means you’ll have to find the beauty in the local experience here.

Even if you’re the only Afro-hair individual living on a small rural island, remember there is a whole community of people here going through the same struggles as you. With some careful research and patience, you’ll quickly find that your hair thrives just as well in Japan as it does anywhere else.

If you’re someone with Afro-hair, we’d love to know how you take care of it in Tokyo! Let us know in the comments.

21 Amazing Japanese Skincare Products to Minimize Pores

The first thing to understand about the skin’s pores is that they don’t actually shrink or grow. Their size is pre-determined by genetics. However, by using the proper skincare, you can make them appear smaller. J-beauty is renowned for its gentle approach to skincare. While this is true, it doesn’t mean there aren’t amazingly effective products that utilize active ingredients to produce noticeable skin improvements. In this Savvy guide, we’re sharing 21 of the best Japanese skincare products to minimize pores, as well as which ingredients to look out for and avoid in order to combat enlarged pores.

The Right Ingredients For Minimizing Pores

When using skincare to minimize the appearance of pores, the goal is to avoid irritation and inflammation and instead promote skin elasticity and hydration for a more plump and smooth complexion.

Using the wrong ingredients can cause excess oil production and clogged pores, which can draw attention to them and make your pores appear larger. So you know what to look for in a product yourself, here are the dos and don’ts of pore-minimizing ingredients:

Pore Minimizing Ingredient Dos

 • BHA, AHA, PHA: These are chemical exfoliants that will keep pores clear and reduce skin congestion. Good ones to look for are the BHA salicylic acid (サリチル酸); AHAs like lactic acid (乳酸) and citric acid (クエン酸); and PHA gluconolactone (グルコノラクトン)
 • ナイアシンアミド (naiashinamido; “niacinimide”): Also known as vitamin B3 (ビタミンB3), Niacinimide regulates oil production and helps you get a smoother skin texture.
 • レチノール (rechinouru; “retinol”): A form of vitamin A (ビタミンA) that increases cell turnover to improve overall texture, as well as regulates sebum and helps to fight acne.
 • アゼライン酸 (azerain san; “azelaic acid”): This acid has antibacterial properties, gently unclogs pores and reduces inflammation.

Pore Minimizing Ingredient Don’ts

 • Comedogenic Oils: Things like coconut oil (ココナッツオイル) and cocoa butter (ココアバター) that are more likely to clog pores by trapping debris in the skin and causing buildup.
 • アルコール (arukoru; “alcohol”): Products with alcohol can strip the skin’s natural oils, causing an increase in oil production while dehydrating skin. Common ones to avoid are ethanol (エタノール), isopropyl alcohol (イソプロピルアルコール) and alcohol denat (変性アルコール).
 • 香料 (kouryou; “fragrance”): A common irritant that can result in inflammation and even breakouts. Watch out for things like linalool (リナロール), citronellol (シトロネロール) and geraniol (ゲラニオール).

Best Japanese Skincare Products To Minimize Pores

Cleansing Oil

Implementing a cleansing oil before a face wash is known as a “double cleanse” and is used to remove impurities from the skin effectively. A cleansing oil, in particular, is excellent for breaking down makeup and sunscreen, ensuring that no residue or debris is trapped in your pores.

BCL Cleansing Research Oil Cleansing Pore Clear

Budget Recommendation: BCL Cleansing Research Oil Cleansing Pore Clear | ¥1,100 for 200ml

Mid Tier Recommendation: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil

Mid Tier Recommendation: DHC Deep Cleansing Oil | ¥2,450 for 200ml

Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil

Luxury Recommendation: Shiseido Perfect Cleansing Oil | ¥4,070 for 180ml

Face Wash

The second step of the double cleanse is to use a water-based cleanser to wash away sweat, dirt and any trace of the cleansing oil. Although it may be tempting to use a stripping face wash to remove all natural oil, we recommend opting for a gentler option. This will prevent your skin from overcompensating for its oil production, leaving you with a fresh face ready for the next step in your skincare routine.

Melano CC Deep Clear Enzyme Face Wash

Budget Recommendation: Melano CC Deep Clear Enzyme Face Wash | ¥600 for 130g

Ishizawa Lab Keana Nadeshiko Baking Soda Scrub Face Wash

Mid Tier Recommendation: Ishizawa Lab Keana Nadeshiko Baking Soda Scrub Wash | ¥1,320 for 100g

DAMDAM Tokyo Nomad’s Cream

Luxury Recommendation: DAMDAM Tokyo Nomad’s Cream | ¥4,950 for 150g

Toner

Japanese toners are somewhat different from what is considered a toner in the West. They are used to hydrate the skin, typically featuring very lightweight formulas that are perfect for more oily complexions. They keep skin plump and well-hydrated, making pores look smaller due to the surrounding skin being smoother and more elastic.

Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Emulsion

Budget Recommendation: Hada Labo Gokujun Premium Hyaluronic Emulsion | ¥855 for 140ml

Hokuroku Sousui Oil Controlling Toner

Mid Tier Recommendation: Hokuroku Sousui Oil Controlling Toner | ¥1,850 for 110ml

SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion Toner

Luxury Recommendation: SK-II Facial Treatment Clear Lotion | ¥10,450 for 160ml

Serum

Japanese toners are the perfect prep for applying active ingredients found in serums. Look for things like Niacinimide, retinol and azelaic acid, but don’t overdo it. Using too many active ingredients can damage the skin barrier, cause breakouts, and make pores look larger and inflamed, especially if you have sensitive skin.

We recommend using only one or two potent actives in your routine, remembering that retinol should be used at night and paired with a morning facial SPF.

Kracie Hadabisei Medicated Brightening Toner

Budget Recommendation: Kracie Hadabisei Medicated Brightening Serum | ¥960 for 30ml

KISOCare 15% Azelaic Acid Serum

Mid Tier Recommendation: KISOCare 15% Azelaic Acid Serum | ¥2,250 for 30ml

SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence Serum

Luxury Recommendation: SK-II GenOptics Aura Essence | ¥22,000 for 30ml

Moisturizer

A moisturizer is important for more than just hydration. It works to lock in the serum and increase effectiveness, as well as actually balancing oil production as dry skin causes excess sebum that clogs and stretches pores. For oily complexions, a gel formula is best, while a richer cream or emollient is more suitable for dry skin.

Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel

Budget Recommendation: Naturie Hatomugi Skin Conditioning Gel | ¥990 for 180g

M-mark Amino Acid Moisturizing Lotion

Mid Tier Recommendation: M-mark Amino Acid Moisturizing Lotion | ¥1,936 for 150ml

DAMDAM Mochi Mochi Luminous Cream

Luxury Recommendation: DAMDAM Mochi Mochi Luminous Cream | ¥9,540 for 50g

SPF

Probably the most crucial daytime skincare step is facial SPF. Without protection, UV rays break down the skin’s elastin and collagen, causing the skin to sag and pores to lose support (and appear larger). Finding the right sunscreen is critical, as many can be overly irritating or oily on the skin.

Hada Labo UV White Gel Moisturizer SPF

Budget Recommendation: Hada Labo UV White Gel Moisturizer SPF | ¥1,250 for 90g

Anessa UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF

Mid Tier Recommendation: Anessa Perfect UV Sunscreen Skincare Milk SPF | ¥3,050 for 60ml

Shiseido Ultimate Sun Protector Lotion SPF

Luxury Recommendation: Shiseido Perfect Sun Protector Lotion SPF | ¥6,600 for 50ml

Masks

Face masks are amazing for focusing on a particular skincare ingredient or result, and maximizing its effectiveness. When it comes to Japanese skincare products to minimize pores, look for masks designed to repair the skin barrier, soothe and lightly exfoliate.

Lululun Hydra V Mask

Budget Recommendation: Lululun Hydra V Mask | ¥770 for 7 masks

Snidel Beauty Smoothing Sheet Mask

Mid Tier Recommendation: Snidel Beauty Smoothing Sheet Mask | ¥2,420 for 3 masks

The Ginza Treatment Facial Mask

Luxury Recommendation: The Ginza Treatment Facial Mask | ¥22,000 for 6 masks

Finding Your Perfect Skincare Routine

Remember, every person’s skin is different. What works for one person might not work for another, and so finding the right Japanese skincare products to minimize pores can take some trial and error. The key is to introduce products one at a time and pay attention to what works best for your individual skin type.
